Another Good Day– March 13, 2014

Late winter, which is really Spring work for us, is going good.

Terry and I worked on the big canal right by our yard…we are terrified the ditch company will come along and burn our whole house down…they haven’t been very good about controlling the fires they start these last four or five years.  So now we take care of everything even remotely close to our house, barns, corrals and haystack yards.

I don’t really understand the work ethic of many people anymore…my maternal grandfather always told my brother and I: work hard, do a good job, respect the other person, and never take away a man’s (or woman’s)  dignity.    My Daddy always said that the customer is always right, if you want to have a good business you take care of the people who purchase from you.

Somehow, somewhere those things have slid far, far away, from how people think of others and to be truthful–customer, member/users have no respect for the store, company or business anymore either.

It’s all a shame really.

But enough of that—-as we were working away we saw the little grandchildren get off the bus and start hiking home.  Our grandson ran by our lane as fast as his twelve-year-old legs could carry him—the I pad was calling I’m sure.  But the two little girls trudged down our lane to hang out with us as we worked.   They even helped by spraying Grandpa with water.  Of course, he had to spray them back…it was a jolly good time!

Gradually, we got done with that project.   In the house we went to get snacks then Terry and I loaded the girls up on the four-wheelers and took them home—THE LONG WAY!  They had huge smiles when they got off.

On-the-land

Back home Grandpa headed out to start plowing (yes we plow–our land requires the deep plowing to bury the shredding corn stalks so the earth worms can start to work on them.  We do have some acreage we don’t plow, just rip and plant.)

Plowing-1

I’m still working on my trash woodpile.  I hope to get it thoroughly sorted today so chain saw can be applied.  This summer we have to do a better job of not just dumping everything into one heap and actually sorting as we go.  (I hope.  One can dream, I suppose. 🙂 )

Your farm friend,

Linda

  1. I’m willing to bet that your granddaughters were delighted that they didn’t rush home from the school bus. It’s too bad you two have to do extra work because of the poor attitude of the water company workers. You definitely don’t want fires getting out of control near your house, barn or equipment.

  2. Sadly I don’t understand the lack of work ethic and poor customer service of today either. We need more people living on farms like you and Terry do.

  3. Hi There, What a great ‘treat’ for both the granddaughters and the grandparents!!!!! Kids grow up so fast… We need to enjoy them as much as we can when they are young!!!!

Sad about the work ethics of people these days. Nobody seems to want to work hard and do the best they can with their lives. People don’t seem to respect others anymore —and are only out for themselves doing as little as they have to in order to make it these days… Sad, isn’t it????

Glad you all are doing what you need to do to protect your property.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  4. I agree with you. Work ethic is oathetic now a days. My son’s generation. 90 babies. Seem to be the generation on me. And entitlists. If you ask him, he will be the first to tell you that. I did not raise him that way. He is a hard worker.
I haven’t been off the ranch in awhile. I don’t know if they are plowing yet or not. I think some of them are plowing the corn fields htoug.

  5. Spring is coming along for you! I would worry about fires too if I were you after that time two years ago. We are melting today!! I don’t believe it is spring but you never know. Some black sports are starting to show up in the fields here.:)

  6. Work ethics??? Just how big is my pay cheque these days. It is quite upsetting.
No syllogism (my new favourite word!!! – double talk!) from me.
Incredible that the people who are employed to light fires to do clearing don’t take
far more care of the actions.
All the best whilst this back burning enterprise is going on.

  7. I’ve noticed the lack of work ethics in this country too……especially in the younger generation……I imagine my granddad said that about my generation too 😉 Seriously though, we live in a spoiled self entitled era.

  8. We’ve had some incredible fires here the last few days with all the wind! The county finally put the ‘fire ban’ back into affect. It only takes a spark…. Yes, I can hardly believe those workers up there could be so careless in areas that burn so easily, just ridiculous!!

We plow here, too, every few years just for weed control. My renter has calves out on the corn stalks hoping that would help, but they sure look like big stalks yet to me. We’ll see.

    Blessings!

  9. What a blessing to have your grandkids so close. Our nine-year-old granddaughter got an iPod, the last two days, she’s discovered she can text me. I’m loving it!

  10. I thought I remembered you talking about the fire before, but I hadn’t read the link you gave us ..maybe that was before I started following you . How scary that must have been. It is no wonder you want to do all of that prep work yourself…but I agree it is too bad that you have to because of the poor attitudes (it’s that way everywhere these days unfortunately).

It must be fairly warm, if you guys were enjoying the water fight ;>)

  11. I love how your blog takes me back to life in the South, growing up on farms. I miss that slower paced life. And what you said about work ethic struck a chord with me. I guess I was lucky enough to grow up poor and started working at a young age. It’s given me a solid work ethic throughout my life, no matter what my pay. Appreciate your blog.

  12. You are so right about the decline in work ethic as well as taking responsibility and a measure of pride in one’s job. It’s sad to see 😦

But what a hoot for the grand daughters – a water fight, gran’s snacks (always the best!) and a hitch home. Be careful it doesn’t become a daily event 🙂
