Small Set-back– March 16, 2014

Terry has started rolling the plowed fields

Started-RollingWhat that means is he is smashing and breaking down the plowed clumps of sod into nice soft soil.  He likes to wait until we have had several freezes on the plowed fields; softening  the clods so they break down into lovely crumbles.  You can see the crumbles here. He’s checking something (I don’t know what) as I was taking this photo.

Big clumps of hard dirt are hard to work with, those of you who garden understand, so getting the clumps into small loose dirt is the goal.

Everything is going well in the farming department.

My woodpile is getting smaller, chunks of old wood have been sawed into burnable lengths and the the longer stuff left until next fall when we start the wood stove back up again.

All of those things are moving along nicely.  The small setback is myself.  In cleaning up the woodpile I stepped on a 6″ nail, stabbing it about 1 1/2″ into my foot.  (Feet really aren’t very tall, I found out as I pulled the stuck nail out of my shoe and foot).  The  wound bled very well (was sort of a mess) so I thought everything was good.

I continued working until late in the afternoon, came in washed up, decided to soak my foot in Epsom Salts to help the healing process along-which I did for about 20 minutes. And decided that I had better go to the hospital for a Tetanus Shot.

Our Doctor only works Monday through Thursday so I knew I would be directed to the hospital anyway.  Gathering up my information, putting on some soft Crocs I hobbled out to the car and drove myself to the hospital 20 minutes away.  Terry was still in the field but I told him I would fix supper when I got back.  But for him to not worry as Emergency Rooms are actually a very slow process to get anything taken care of.

At the hospital I checked in, showed the nurse, she showed me into a small room, had me get up on the bed, looked at my foot again and went ……….hummmmmmmmmm.  And left.  Back she came with cleaning things and cleaned all around my foot and said the Doctor would be in shortly to check the area.  I said okay, but all I really need is a tetanus shot as I can’t remember the last time I had one….way over 10 years ago, I think.

I settled back and opened my Kindle and started reading.  I sure was glad I brought it along to help pass the time.

Enter the Doctor…we chat for a bit, he sits down and looks at my foot…I told him what happened, requested a shot, and yes, it hurts, top and bottom.

To make a long story short I had to have a small surgery to open the area back up, he dug around for a spell, cleaned out a part of my shoe and rust from the nail and some specks of dirt.

That was Friday, today is Sunday…many shots, pills and pain medication later my foot is still red and swollen. I am sure it is healing as I don’t have to use a cane to walk with today, which is a blessing.  I had to go back yesterday for a check -up and re-clean the area. And I’m now able to wear my own shoe on my foot, instead of Terry’s, if I need to walk anywhere.

A small set back…I’m sure.

Your friend,

Linda

  4. Ouch! Puncture wounds are painful enough without having it cut open. Good thing you did, though, or it could have been very bad. Quick healing vibes to you!

  6. Oh dear Linda, I am sorry you had to experience the dreaded nail-in-foot!! Glad you went to the hospital for a shot and help. I’m sure you’ll be back running around the fields soon! You probably went to the hospital in Delta, which I’m quite familiar with! They were good to my Mom in the ER and also during her hospital stay. Take care and I hope you aren’t waylaid too long!!! Hugs!!

  7. I’m sorry to hear about your ‘setback’. I’m glad you went to the hospital as soon as you did. I’ve stepped on nails before, and it is not a pleasant experience. I hope you are soon completely healed.

  8. Oh Linda, So sorry about your accident. I know how painful a nail in the foot is, too. Glad you went to the ER and had it looked at. Please try to take it easy and stay off that foot as much as possible for the next few days. (I know, easy to say, hard to do).

  9. Yep, I am very familiar with nails in the feet….but mine didnt go in that deep, I stepped on it and immediately knew what I stepped on and lifted my foot so it just barely nicked my skin. Hope yours heals quickly.

  10. I gasped when I read about that. Thank God for tetanus shots – back in the 1920’s, my grandfather died from stepping on a nail (tetanus=lockjaw). And now, a small setback. Sounds like you have a thorough doctor! Do take care though.

  11. Ouch…ouch,,,ouch…I needed a pain pill just to read this. The body has great mechanisms to fight off what should not be there, but medication makes it heal faster. You are very brave.

  12. Ouch! Linda, sending wishes (and a huge bunch of cyber daffodils) for a speedy recovery – and that it doesn’t hurt to much along the way. Do take care!

  13. What bad luck! When we were kids we ran around bare-footed and were always stepping on nails. My mother would make sure that we were rushed up to the doctor for a tetanus shot every time. Nasty things, rusty nails. But you did all the right things, and should heal well.

  14. OUCHYWAWA!! That even hurts me. Inch and a half?? What!!

It was a good thing no one listened to your request of a shot and I’ll be on my way.

Cleaned not once but twice. This is a nasty injury and is gonna hurt for awhile.

Maybe you should just give orders for a few days while you rest up.

  15. Oh geez! That sounds like it hurt like a son of a gun! An inch & a half? Yikes! Glad you went to the doc before an infection set in. You take care. And wear Terry’s shoes if you have to! Make sure you get pics with his shoes on! 🙂

  16. So good you decided to get it seen to – even if only for a tetanus shot. Definitely an infection waiting to happen. Didn’t imagine about a bit of the shoe being there, but you were well looked after. Hoping it heals fast and take care 🙂 xx

  19. A friend and I were working on a two story porch and he’d thrown some wood under the first deck. We went to the basement door which was in a small concreted well under the first floor deck to sit in the shade for a break. He sat on an old rust 16 penny nail sticking out of one of the boards. Had to take him to the hospital, the staff were caring but highly amused as he had a hole in his buttock. He had that cleaned up and a dressing put on, a tetanus shot and some antibiotics. It took him a couple weeks before it wasn’t uncomfortable to sit on a hard chair. He’s still teased about that from time to time.
That’s a bad place to have a puncture wound like that. Take good care of it and hope you heal well.

  20. Small set-back she says! That’s not “small” by any means. Ouch! And I’m so pleased that someone took a good look at it for you – it could have become seriously infected. Take special care of yourself – and I hope those furry ones are nursing you back to health.
