Right on Time— March 18, 2014

We had a pretty amazing wind yesterday.  Ripped the plastic off my chicken house pen, flung some of the lawn stuff here and there.  The weather people said the wind would come up at noon and die down around nine in the evening.  They were close…the wind came up about one o’clock and died sometime way after I went to be around ten.

Yesterday morning we had this

YepYep!

There are always those who think they must burn….always.

Dust-and-WindThat afternoon we had dust and smoke and wind, mixed with some clouds coming in from the west. You can still see some of the smoke drifting around in the hollow just below our mesa.

Sigh!

So far nothing on our farm burned and as far as I can tell no one around us lost anything.  I did hear the firetrucks go out in the late afternoon.  Thank Heaven for the Volunteer Firemen!

Wind-in-the-furPoor old Fuzz-Dude about blew away. He also was a huge magnate for all the trash that was flying in the air.

It’s still blowing today.  It also looks like storms are playing around in the mountains. Storms made up of rain.

Wind is so very important to help the plants bring the sap up from the roots that I work really hard with myself to not get too carried away with Not Liking the Wind.  I even have been known to stand out in it and pretend I know what  kite feels like.  For today, we have a sap rising wind, a few very cold storms and a small cold front which leaves tonight sometime.

I hope you all have a good day….

Your Western Colorado Farm Friend,

Linda

  1. Sheesh! Here permission must be granted to burn. IF there is smoke and no burn request, we are paged out. Starting this year we also have to have a burn permit on record.
Fuzzy needs one of those nice wind proof pull overs.
I see buds swelling here too but we are still some way off. But , I did see more cranes on Sunday. There were 2 pair down near the river. We are having unsettled, change of season weather.

  3. I used to call the EPA to complain about these people burning their fields and slash piles on windy days and was told that they have no control over this…..only within town limits. So, what good are they? Also the Forest Service and BLM don’t have to follow EPA rules, either. If winds help the sap in the trees then all the trees here have sap up on their tippy tops. I thought we were going to blow away the other night. I am dreaming of 70 degree days with no wind and lots of sunshine,

  4. Geezz~Louise, Linda! Doesn’t it make you wonder!!! Really windy here, too. Horizontal snow. Fuzzy looks like a totally different pup with his windblown hair 🙂 I don’t think animals much like the wind either. Hope this moves out of here…. soon! Howz that foot doing???

  5. Seems that you need restrictions/legislations on when to carry out burn offs/burn backs and with wind blowing strongly surely some sense would prevail?
Here, Australia, restrictions are enforced and God help the starters of burn offs/backs if they break the law. Actually burn backs here are done by the local fire brigades – rural or voluntary and permits must be issued and notices given to landholders in the area.
Burn backs are definitely necessary to get rid of rubbish but must be supervised.

  6. That’s a great photo of Fuzzy – he looks like an Old English Sheepdog. Wind is very unsettling to the mind, isn’t it, but I love how the sky looks scrubbed clean after a big blow.

  7. That wind hit us early today, with a bit of snow coming in sideways. A very unpleasant day.

You should know that now whenever I curse the wind, I will always think of plants and roots and sap and farmers and try not to curse too much. (Hope your foot is better.)

  8. I did not know that about wind and sap. huh. Can always learn something new!
We have a cat that hates when then wind does that to her fur, haha.
Glad to hear you were safe from the idiots during the wind. ♥

  9. Interesting about the wind and the rising sap Linda – I didn’t know that.
When the wind is in the west here (as it is today) the sound blows down the chimney and makes
such a dreadful noise that I switch off my hearing aid!

  10. Doesn’t Fuzzy look great with that windswept hairdo! That’s a terrific photo. And I can’t believe idiots who burn without thinking! Selfish and so irresponsible 😦

  11. I didn’t know that wind was helpful with plants. I’ll try to remember that next time I’m getting blown away and eating dust. Just now getting settled back down enough to catch up with things. Reading back through to see what happened to your foot. Glad everything else (so far 😉 looks like it’s heading in the right direction. Okay, back to reading. As always, such a treat!
