Belly-Up to the Bar —May 21, 2014

Kitchen

Last year we had so much fun feeding the hummingbirds that I added in two more feeding stations, which make four more feeders.

Gradually, I’m about to get all the feeders hung up.  I have four more to fill and hang.  I only hang as many as I have hummingbirds.

Dinner

At last count I have 8 pair of hummingbirds

Fuel

Two different species

Look

They are most active just as the first light comes into the sky and as heavy dusk starts to descend.  Sleeping takes lots of food, so it seems.

TwoAlthough, they are very active through out the day.

Coming-in

After the last set of irrigation Terry and I like to sit outside and just watch them.  Their little wings make a huge buzzing sound and they even chirp and chatter among themselves.
I do try to scatter the poles apart so the bully birds can’t defend ALL of them.  They only get to defend One!  🙂

Hidden-and-seeing

We even have four sets of these amazingly SHY little birds.  I love their brilliant colors!  They are VERY good at hiding from me.  If I point the camera in their direction they immediately fly off.  Silly birds.

I’m finding this Sugar Water Buffet is really fun for everyone.  The grandchildren like to stand and see if a bird will land on them, so far it hasn’t happened.  But miracles do happen so maybe by the end of summer.  We will see!

Your farm friend,

Linda

  1. Now, there’s something to envy. We don’t have hummingbirds in Australia. I’ve seen and loved them in the West Indies, but there’s nothing like it here. We do have tiny, tiny birds in brilliant colours, but none that hover.

  2. I haven’t seen a hummingbird here yet – but I do have a painted bunting that visits just about every day! Beautiful little bird!

  3. How cool too have that many. I’ve put out feeders for them, but they like the flowers better I guess.
I had a little wren land on me yesterday in the yard! Kinda spooked me! Ha!

  4. I really should put out a special feeder for them. Mine have to settle for a drink from my lavender plants and it isn’t as satisfying I am sure

  5. Don’t ya just love these little guys 🙂 Ours are back, too! I have two feeders out right now, and they are so active. And I am jealous of your oriole! We had them in town, but we are over a 1000′ higher out here in the Forest, so I haven’t seen any. I had two oriole feeders and they would nest in our big cottonwood every year. Then bring their babies to the feeders. You need an oriole feeder, too!

  6. You have such a beautiful setting for your hummers! I have a couple, but not such a nice setting as yours. Looks like your Oriole loves the sugar water, too. I, also, have a Bullock Oriole pair here. They are so bright and cheery colored…they come for baths in my birdbath. Love seeing your hummers, Linda. Now I must go and make some more syrup for mine!

Having clouds overhead….hoping for rain! Blessings!

  7. I love the little ones. I look forward to the first one every year.
My hummingbirds hover in front of my kitchen windows when their two feeders are empty.
How on earth do you keep that many feeders clean? It takes me 20 minutes to clean the mold and bugs out of the two I have.

  8. Although we have seen them many times in the US we dont have them here, sadly. Is it important to get the ratio of sugar to water right in those feeders?

  9. Great title! These little birds are quite amazing and gorgeous. We have quite the same here and I nevet get tired to observe their relentless little dance around my feeders as well. Lovely photos, as always.

  10. Look at them all! Your yard is such a delight! We only get the Ruby-throated here, and seem to have either one or two pairs. Hard to tell. I am so enjoying your feeders. Lots of birds this year!
