Flying Low — May 25, 2014

The other day Terry and I went for a small ride, just to break up the monotony.  We headed up to Blue Mesa Reservoir and then on into Gunnison. While traveling into the town of Gunnison we happened to see this low flying flying machine heading right toward us

hhhh How cool is this!

hhhAnd we were stopped at the stop light AND…

hhI had my camera out sitting right by me!

hThey flew along the side of the car close enough we could read the words on the side of the jet!

We rolled the windows down and enjoyed the whole sensation…power, speed and excitement all rolled into just the few minutes it took for the red light to change into a green for go!

The whole thing was pretty darn exciting.

After a quick lunch we drove home.  The water in the Blue Mesa Reservoir is slowly rising it has a long ways to go until it reaches the normal spot on the sides but it so much better than last year.

Your Farm Friend,

Linda

  1. I’ll bet there are some plane spotters who would be pretty happy with those shots – nice one 🙂

The nearest we get are our Turkish AF jets screaming off towards Iraq or Syria when tensions brew (err… a regular occurrence)

  2. Hi Linda, What an awesome view you had of the low-flying plane… Your photos are terrific. When my sons were little, we would drive out to a spot on the other side of the airport in Knoxville and watch the airplanes go in and out… SO much fun!!!! Sounds like you had a wonderful day! Glad you could get away!!!! AND–I’m glad the water levels are rising…

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  3. Looks like it could be a C-17 Globemaster. Used by the Air Force as a troop and cargo carrier and for medevac purposes. It would be exciting to see one of those planes flying by right outside your car window! Glad you had your camera at the ready.

  4. Ah ha – the eyes of the military watching you.
It sure is a C-17 Globemaster 111 troop and equipment carrier.
Not one of ours from Australia, so we are blameless ha ha!

Great weather again here and only 5 days to winter – yuck!

Great to know besides the unexpected air display that the water
    is rising in the reservoir.

  5. Wow, a Globemaster! They have such a distinctive profile, with the big heavy belly hanging below the wing. I live on the flight path into our airport and regularly get very, very close up views of the undersides and landing gear of Boeing 777s, Fokkers and the occasional biplane, but nothing as big as yours!

  6. The military regularly uses the Gunnison airport for high altitude flight training, with crews and planes such as this coming in from Delaware. Quite a sight to see in repeated touch and go passes across the airport runway.

  7. Glad you were able to get away. What an amazing sight to have the plane so close!! Great pictures of it! Clovis, NM. had an air show yesterday that the kids went to and loved it all. Had all kinds of planes there and the Thunderbirds. But I doubt any of them flew as close as the plane out your window!!

    Have a great Memorial Day….Blessings!

  8. What a spectacle! The noise must have been exciting… we have RAF jets fly low over us occasionally, even the collie ducks! Great news about the water, fingers crossed for more. Brilliant photos.
