The Sky Drained of Color —- Tuesday, August 14, 2018

The sky filled with smoke more than ever before yesterday.

Leaving not a smidge of blue sky anywhere

Tendrils of smoke wafted around our heads, in our eyes, and settled upon our skin

The whole sky had a grey sheen to it

The air smelled of forests burning,

the taste of wood ash on our tongues

the smoke lay heavy although smoke itself is not heavy

It might as well be

It comes in such a volume it weights on all lungs — human, animal, bugs, and plants

That breathing is a stress upon itself.

Gradually the sun turned the sky to pink and the smoke turned the sun red

As the western side of the United States continues to burn.

With sadness your friend on a western Colorado farm,

Linda

  1. Oh, Linda, I’m so sorry you’re still being inundated with heavy smoke. It has to be hard on you and your critters. And no hope of rain for any of us here in the Western 1/2 of the country. But the sunsets are beautiful. Sandy.

  2. GET INSIDE, QUICKLY!!!! You are breathing very unhealthy air. It is bad for all of you .Keep the pets in too, and change your air filters daily. If you can’t avoid going outside, use a respirator!!! We are having the same problem in California, and people are being warned to stay indoors. People with lung problems are being told to evacuate! My neighbors little girl is in the hospital with a serious asthma attack. Good luck!

  3. Air quality from fires in Southern Oregon has been between orange and red for weeks. Horrible and sad for people and animals. The hottest summer I can remember in over 25 years. Your flowers are extra beautiful this year… I so enjoy your pictures.

  4. The news is reporting that the smoke from the western wildfires has made it all the way to east coast. As if that’s not bad enough we are also getting smoke from Canadian wildfires. Please stay indoors as much as you can.

  5. I am so sorry about the smoke. Sometimes we get a little bit from wildfires in Canada and it makes breathing hard. I can’t imagine how awful it is for you! Love your Four O’clocks. I think of you every time I go outside and admire the ones I grew from your seeds.
