About Dayphoto

My name is Linda Brown. I live on a farm on the western slope of Colorado, in the high mountain desert. I’ve lived here all my life, hailing back four generations on my father’s side. Today I blog about our farm, the everyday activities that keep the farm going. I also write about my thoughts and dreams and goals. On Friday’s I always write about TLC Cai-Cai. Our sweet kitty who helps keep the farm safe. And Boo Berry Betty, a breeder dog learning to be a Farm Dog! The lovely thing about blogging it opens the world up for all of us to reach out and meet people from many different cultures and different ways of life. You can find me every day (but Saturday) at https://coloradofarmlife.wordpress.com/ Your Friend on a Western Colorado Farm, Linda Brown

Corn-Field Corn-Picking Corn-Feed Corn…..

Just like anything living, corn also has oddities in its lineage.  This corn ear decided to grow on the top of the stalk, in place of one of the tassels.

Corn is food for deer, but not like food for you and I.  Deer love to eat the silk.  They will eat the kernels too, but yummm, they LOVE the silk!

The love to eat the silk just as the little kernels are forming, of course, that kills the ear.  This ear has withered on the stalk from Deer munching silk.

This is the new variety of corn Terry grew this year.

Life on the Ditchbank

Lots of animals walk along the ditch bank….

….coyotes, dogs, birds of all sorts,

our cats,

and (sometime feral cats), sometimes the cows get out

and raccoons.

September Corn

It won’t be long now.  Harvest is just around the corner.  The ears are full and fat, when the kernels dent, and the ears turn down, harvest will begin.

Dragon Fly and the Corn Tassel

This beautiful Dragonfly was resting on top of the corn tassel, so I captured it for time and eternity with my camera.  Now I am sharing it with you.

Beautiful Baby and Grandpa

We have photos of Grandpa sleeping with Bladen and Linkin, so I just couldn’t pass up one of Grandpa sleeping with Tallin. (Although, there are others already posted on the blog.)

Pinto Beans (Red Beans)

The beans are starting to get ripe.

When ripe comes to pinto beans the leaves of the beans start to turn yellow and the pods have purple strips. Once that happens it is time to pull the beans for harvest.

Terry will pull beans sometime this week, after which they will lay in the field until all the leaves have fallen off the stems and the stems are dry.  Then he will bring in the combine.

I will keep you posted.  The Harvest Season has begun!

Free-Range Chickens-Three Months Old and Loving It!

The chickens are learning everyday that being ‘out of the box’ is wonderful!  There are bugs to eat, grasshoppers to catch, and green things to peck on.

That taking a bath can be very rewarding. (This rooster just finished fluffing around in the loose dirt, and was resting when I took his photo). He was a little startled by the flash.

Even if most of the girls “hens” look alike their personalities are very different.  These two are part of ‘group’ that likes to follow me around, just in-case.  Just in-case I stir up a grasshopper, or pull a tasty weed, or happen to be working in the yummy tomato bed….

The flash on the camera is always a bit of a shock.

As you can tell, Polk-Dot Boss has molted all his feathers (and dots), a rather sad thing for me.  I can still tell him apart as he is the one I can pick-up, the other one tries to peck me, and the third one squawks and runs away.

Summer Suppers

One nice thing about have kids living close by is the fact that they live close enough to come for supper.

Mowing the Lawn

The rain is a good thing for the lawn.  It takes me an hour on a riding lawnmower, and even longer to water it.
