SNOW!!!!!

It started snowing as I left work for home.

And turned off cold!  Really cold so cold we had to build a fire.  We are now in for the long haul of winter.

The snow didn’t stay long, but still……

Is This the Last ?!

It’s raining now, and all last night.  More rain for the rest of the week and snow for Tuesday and Wednesday.  Of course that could change and the whole thing blow out of here tomorrow.  (Oh, that we should be so lucky!)

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Storm Blowing In

My drive to work in Paonia today was beautiful!  Just beautiful!  The whole day has been a day of wonder… when I woke up this morning a fox was sitting on the back door steps.  I think he was as shocked as I was that I opened the door and found him/her there.

Now the cat wasn’t too happy about it, Sammy changed his mind real fast about not wanting to go outside.

He didn’t need to worry … the fox left just a fast as a blink of an eye.  I went out and checked to make sure he was gone and that the chickens were safe.  Still Sammy stayed in the house until it was starting to get lighter in the sky, then he must have decided that the fox would be gone and went out.

We have a storm coming in today/night with rain and snow so I suppose the colors will soon be gone.  The earth has turned enough that we are now looking at snow.

Our corn is still to high of moisture to start combining…we are coming in around 20%.  The rain will keep the moisture up there, but once we start having snow we should see the air starting to dry out and the moisture in the corn dropping

Autumn Days and Daylight Savings Time

It won’t be long now until we lose Daylight Saving Time

I hate the switch over…the nights are longer that ever

Even though now I drive into work just as the sun is getting up

I will go home in the twilight

I miss the early morning mists rising ff the river, as when I come it will be an hour later.

I’

Oh, well.  Not much I can do about it, but enjoy what time I have left of Daylight Savings Time and look forward to Spring.

Almost a New Roof

So, of course, Terry and I under-estimated the time it would take to put a new roof on

Not only that we still think we are 40 and not in our 60’s

And of course there is the leak that has to be fixed first

So as we are working on it, one of our neighbors dropped by and asked Terry to come down and help him with the starter on his tractor.  So glad for a break, Terry went with Sam.  One hour later Sam’s tractor was fixed and Sam was back in the field finishing up his hay.

The next morning…who showed up?  Sam! Ready to help.

They got the hole patched and the roof covered with tarp before the rains hit.

They are still working on the roof today and will be tomorrow.  But I must say….two on the roof makes for much faster work.

I still handle the stuff on the ground, but now Terry has really good help.

It’s Almost Time

Terry’ has been working on the corn combine getting it ready to start corn harvest.  Seems like equipment always has issues after sitting around for a year…even if it is put up nicely. (Of course it could be ours has issues because they are old.)

We’ve been seeing lots of little visitors to the corn fields and of course the deer are still bedding down in them.  Once the harvest starts they will leave, but not now.  Hunting season starts this week end so they are staying close, close to the farm.

We finished the last irrigation of the year and turned off the water for good.  The alfalfa doesn’t dare go into the winter bone dry.  On October 31, the canal will be shut off and the dams closed at Taylor, Blue Mesa and Ridgway dams until March of 2011.  Farming will officially be over of another year.

Until then, though, we still have the corn to harvest…from the field to this

That is the goal as soon as the corn gets dry enough.

New Dog on the Farm

We didn’t pick him.

Somebody dumped him off.   He was so hungry he went into the skunk trap and

bam…

We now have another dog…He looks to be around 5-7 years old, a purebred Beagle, nutered, house trained (loves to sleep on furniture—but THAT is NOT going to happen), and has good hips.

He and Fuzzy get along, Fuzzy who really doesn’t like any other dog—ever.

So Fuzzy has a new pal and (I can’t seem to think of a good name) has a new home.

Sigh!

The Weather Has Turned

We had snow in the high country over night…the peaks of the San Juan’s are white.  I wonder if we have moved away from fall and are now headed into winter?

Oh!  Please!  Not Yet!!!!

The cows that are so lucky to get to spend their summers in the high country are coming home now.  The air all around us is a cacophony of cattle calling and talking to each other.  The calves are being weaned and the open (un-bred) cows-are being separated from their sisters/friends and the bulls are being ushered into the bull pastures.

It always amazes me how docile a bull can become once he is in the old-boys club and the females are no where around.  Posturing occurs across all lines of species, I guess.

Our girls (we only have four)  don’t get to go to the mountain, they never leave the place, spending all their lives right here on our hillsides and pastures.

We haven’t started weaning yet…next month.

At least the rain has cleared out for a little while.  That will give us time to get some of the outside chores done.  We are laying new irrigation pipe and making some new ditches.  It’s easier to do this time of year instead of during the spring work.

Have a nice weekend everyone!
