Crag Crest Trail

Sign

For all of you hikers out there, add this to your 100 trails you must hike before you die list.  It is a 10 mile circular trail, traveling over a crest and looping back to the start point.

 Through-the-Trees

When I was young, 11, 12, 13, and 14, we lived on Grand Mesa (Colorado) every summer due to my health.

Rock-Side

(It is just an hour away).

Up-the-Craig

Every week for the first two years, Momma, my brother and I would hike this trail.

Up-the-Crest

I don’t remember it being such a hard thing to do, but whew! It is!

 Over-the-Top

(Pant, Pant, Wheeze…man the things I do to post on a blog!!! Whew!)

On the crest both sides of the path drop off steeply allowing the hiker to look into Mesa County on the right

Delta-County-Side

See the bookcliffs in the distance?

Land-of-the-Lakes

and Delta County on the left.  Grand Mesa has 100’s of lakes.

Down-the-Trail

We gradually get back to tree line.

5-Miles-across

Walking along the lower edge

Around-the-Lake

Until we get back to the cars.

Down-the-Other-Side

There you have it, a top of the world tour from Grand Mesa, Colorado!

  1. Hi there, Thank you for sharing this with us-there is still so much of Colorado I’ve yet to see and may never get to it all so I love seeing new places via my friends. Hope all is well with you.

  2. WOW…..that is certainly a “HIKE” of a lifetime!

Did you ever encounter Bears? Or any other threatening wildlife on your hikes?

Even here where I live…….25 miles SE of Erie PA…we have Black Bears. I live on a dirt road and I don’t think I would take a walk near sundown or after dark alone on my road……even for 1/2 mile!! I’m a chicken for sure.

The picturesque scenery is absolutly beautiful!

  4. I love when you do this, thank you so much! It’s absolutely gorgeous, and I SO want to come up there and ride that trail. Not hike. I might die if I had to walk that far uphill. Good job girl!!

  6. Looks great. We camped on the Mesa once and we got eaten up with mosquitos. The wrong time to be there evidently. We will have to go back that way. What health problem did you have? Great that you were able to hike.

  7. OMG gorgeous and I love that you share this!
Sunday (or monday’s) post will be just for you and I will share some of where we are from as well. You have allowed me to go for a hike without getting tired or having to pay for a plane ticket to get there!

    🙂

  9. Wow, what a beautiful hike. Reminds me of the summer we spent in Silver Springs, CO — we found some awesome hiking, I just don’t remember where it was. That was over 10 years ago, when my son was 16. We let him bring a friend and we took my dalmatian with us too. It was so beautiful!

This is our second summer on the Western Slope and enjoy it so very much the area is a photo takers dream.

Thanks for a great blog…..definitely a book mark
