Oh I want some of those corn stalks for fall decorations. LOL When we had a dairy farm years ago we cut silage for our cows. I remember well the long back breaking hours and late night meals.

City girl here! Where are the ears of corn? Were they harvested already and now you’re just doing the stalks? Or is feed corn a whole different animal from sweet corn (having no big ears like the stuff I see in the truck farm up the street from me) so you harvest slim ears right along with the stalks and leaves and that makes the silage for the cattle?

I should have asked this question of someone years ago, I know. thanks for your patience.

Is this for a dry corn kernal harvest? Certainly it’s not sweet corn, looking at the seemingly dead colk stalks.

Don’t worry…we’re ringing out the rain clouds up here…hopefully they’ll be dry when they get down your way. :o)

Ever so interesting! Same question – is this for feed corn? I need me some of those stalks for fall decor! That sounds so silly to you guys I’m sure, cuz it’s part of your livelihood and the rest of us just wanna decorate with it!

As I was driving over to the river to meet up with Tim yesterday, I passed a big field in mid-harvest – would have been a great picture if I’d had my camera with me – and thought of you. Great minds… ;-).

The corn is there. You can see them in the first photo…little brown dots of silk on each ear.

This is feed corn…so it is harvested dry. Silage is the whole GREEN plant chopped up and left to ferment.

Thanks for putting all the answers to the questions in the comments. I’m learning a lot about corn. I was all set to ask if this was seed corn. This must have been a very hard job when people did this by hand. I hope you get it all done before the rain comes too!
