Broken Water Pipe

Last night we had a cold water (Thank Heaven!) pipe break and run for an hour or so in the house.

We are still cleaning up the mess….the kitchen; bathroom, back porch and the basement were all flooded. Ankle high!

So I am not able to post much today, but hope to be back in full-swing tomorrow.

Just for your enjoyment…. Monkey (Terry’s cat) got so upset with all the water she jumped into the cabinet and the door shut on her. There is nothing in this cabinet but cans so ‘no fur in food’ occurred.

It was so funny I had to take a photo of it.  There had to be some sort of a bright spot in the rather long, long evening.

(Yes, I needed to clean off the cabinet)

  1. Oh My! Kitties! I see we have the same wood grain back splashes under our cabinets. Cool!

Water all over your floor at a very not decent hour…not cool. I am so sorry. Hope all is dry soon!!

  2. It’s bad enough that it is cold and snowy out side, but a burst pipe and all the cleanup that goes along with it, bah humbug. Hope you and the kitty suffered no permanent damage.

  3. Ugh – I hate it when that happens! I remind myself all the time that this is one of the downsides of my beloved little farm, but that doesn’t help much when you’re mopping the water, does it? 😦

  4. Oh, MAN. I HATE IT when that happens. We’ve had frozen broken pipes here a couple of times when that arctic air hits. Water damage is miserable. Glad the cat gave you a moment or two of humor to take the edge off.

  5. So sorry about your water problem. Hope you had a shop vac. That’s a heck of a way to have to clean house, huh?! That’s too cute about Monkey!

  6. Oh dear, this sounds terrible. All that extra work to do right before Christmas. I hope there’s not to much damage on the furniture, at least it is clean water, not mud or anything. Take care !

  8. Hi Linda

That’s the last thing you would want in winter! Ruined carpets and floors – I hope that your insurance comes to the rescue?
I, touch wood, have never experienced this calamity in my life from “Broken Water Pipes” – although I have had floods in my youth where water just rotted everything in the house and cyclones have caused havoc since I have been in Brisbane. Twice. Absolute carnage of homes and the belongings – floor boards and coverings are not cheap to replace and there is no way that until you have the carpets removed that the stench will go. Rotting carpets from water are just so horrible and you have to endure this during snow storms!!! I don’t know if your blog readers realise that if this was to be caused by a freak storm, that animals and birds, have an inner sense that tells them to get out! They all disappear to shelter and the quietness is amazing.
We, here in Australia, get these from floods and storms –
( cyclonic in the tropics). I dare say water pipes problems do occur also. Just ask the residents of New Orleans when that freak business occurred. Just so terrible to witness and taking so long for things to be done. I loved my visit to New Orleans – an amazing place in the 1970’s – a real jewel for the USA for tourists – history on all sides – Spanish, French etc.

Great reporting from the life on a Colorado Farm which I love viewing as it continually brings back youthful memories. I just hope that your viewers realise that this happening in a rural area, on a farm and in winter, it is not easy to get immediate relief! Seems to me your bloggers were more concerned about the cat in the cupboard! Just unbelievable.
Best wishes on the quickest of clean-ups, but with your present weather situation – how and when????
    Commiserations on your predicament.
    Colin

  9. Oh no, just catching up, but oh dear, that is no fun. Believe me, I am speaking from experience here.

Six years ago, our washing machine hose broke while we were out for the evening. My laundry room is upstairs!

It wasn’t pretty, when we arrived home at 11 pm, our bottom floor was 2 inches deep in water, my kitchen ceiling had fallen to the floor, the livingroom ceiling came crashing down. Lots of damage. Ceilings, walls, carpet and furniture all needed replaced. Our home was not livable for 3 weeks.

Oh, and I had 6 dogs at the time. Needless to say, the reason Jeni is so terrified of different noises, and clicking sounds, she was only a puppy, and in her crate when this happened:(

Just terrible. I am so glad it wasn’t any worse, and you were able tog et it taken care of in a timely manner.

  10. There’s been a LOT of broken water pipes around here lately, too. Fortunately (knock on wood) we have only had frozen hoses outside, which we drug into the house to thaw. Funny kitty to hide in the cupboard! One of my cats, Munchkin, loves to sleep in the towel drawer between the sink and the stove. He will open the cabinet door and climb up into the drawer from inside the cabinet. I frequently have to remove the top layer of towels and rewash them so we don’t have cat hair all over.
