When You Heat With Wood

When you heat with wood

You have to clean the chimney.

Which means you let the fire go out, the coals turn to ash and then it’s

 Terry’s job.

I am terrified of heights.  As you can tell by the need to paint the trim on the house.

And no, the brick is not loose in the chimney, nor is it full of holes; the light just makes it look that way.

So someday soon, I’ll have to have one of my kids come visit and help me paint.

  1. I am always a nervous wreck when my husband gets on our bowed roof to clean that dang chimney. I invision him sliding off and tangled up like Chevy Chase in the movie “Christmas Vacation”!

  2. Capping sounds like a good idea. I think I would want climbing gear on if I had to get on the roof. Cleaning chimneys is a very good idea. Kudos to Terry! I had a neighbor who had to go out and use the hose to shoot water down the chimney to put out a fire. Messy. Your covered walkway is a great idea!

  3. My brother and I were in charge of cleaning the chimney when we were kids. we used a log chain and a really long board, we were so happy when we finally bought a real sweep. Its quite a dirty job!

  4. I am with Prairie Runner (Linda) I have aluminum trim and I hope it never has to be replaced in my lifetime. I am afraid of heights too. We have an outdoor wood stove and the heat comes in through water lines underground..nice and toasty and the wood mess is outdoors..we do occasionally get a chimney fire too..
We have had lots of wood burners in various other houses..cleaning that chimney is a must! 🙂

  5. When we put up our new house, Steve installed the metal bestos chimneys. No more climbing up on the roof to clean them. I don’t miss that. I sure wouldn’t be getting up there!

Jobs around the farm never end do they? We need to paint as well. Maybe next year 🙂

    Have a great weekend 🙂

  6. I am so glad to have an outside wood stove now. The cook stove isn’t used all the time, so it doesn’t take much to clean. It is also a short one. I don’t like heights all that much myself!

  7. Did you know that seeing a chimney sweep is lucky?… So you just passed on a whole lot of luck to a bunch of people.. Thanks.
So you want us to help you paint? OK… I like to paint, I know Evan doesnt, but I do. Your stove keeps the house so cozy… Sometimes I wish ours was in the house so I could warm up my fingers and toes. Have a great day!

  8. Wow! That is high up there-I go into vapors thinking of heights! My dear hubby took me to Black Canyon one year. Oh dear, did that ever do me in! I want a wood stove when I downsize, guess I’d better find a good chimney sweep. Can’t beat them for warmth, tho.

  9. HAha – this post makes me laugh! We need to clean out the chimney in our rental house and the 7 chimneys in our little historic house! Want to send Terry this way to help out?? You can come too, Linda – you & I can stay inside safe & sound while the men go out on the roofs!! 🙂

  10. I tried to leave a comment on your other post but it didn’t go through. I had the same problem when I added the snow to my blog but I think it’s okay now.
Anyway, I know well what you mean because we heat with wood also.
