I Have a New Friend

This isn’t our cow.  She belongs to a neighboring rancher who is renting the sweet corn field next to us.  She is really nice girl, comes to the fence every morning and every evening to watch me do the chores.  She is fascinated with the chickens and has been known to sniff on Sammy-Sam the cat.

Since she is a range cow, I’m sure she doesn’t have a name, but I have named her Friend.

 Cold here again.

 And snowing.

Next week is February ….winter is, hopefully, winding down.

  1. Too bad she doesn’t have opposable thumbs. She could give you a hand with those chores. Or she could do them while you stayed out of the cold.

She does have a pretty face.

  2. That looks like a rather large cow. You just never know where a new friend will pop up. Hmm Feb. around here Feb usually gets pretty ugly….who knows this year the weather has been so strange …maybe it will be ok.

  3. I love cows, too! She’s a pretty good sized lady. Just got my electricity back from our ice/snow storm-after 16 hrs without. Did you get ice or snow yesterday or Wednesday? Have an inch of ice here and 4 inches of snow. Makes for treacherous travel by foot or vehicle. I knew it might be coming so was all prepared-lots of water and firewood. Am prepared for it to go off again as it’s only 20 degrees, so no thawing and lots of accidents on the highway to possible hit an electric pole, also still ice on wires. I’m ready for spring!!! Take care

  4. Hi Linda

What breed would the cow be? Certainly not either a hereford or an aberdeen angus or a cross of the two. From the size and build it looks like a beef breed. Looks like a “Holstein-Friesian”, but they are a milk ( dairy) breed.
When you refer to “range” cattle, are these cattle which during the summer months are let loose into the surrounding mountains to fend for themselves and then rounded up prior to the winter and brought back into fenced allottments with some shelter and where they can be hand fed?
This happens here in the Snowy Mountains region of southern NSW and northern Victoria. The ‘greenies’ are trying to have it stopped, but the cattlemen are still winning the battle. It is public land which does not belong privately to people. It has a name, I suppose there is a name for it in the USA also, I can’t think of it.
Reservations is the best that comes to mind, but I know that is incorrect. Maybe something like, where in the USA the buffalo are allowed to roam unhindered and protected?

    Cheers
    Colin

  5. Cows can have such personality. So many people just think of them as dull sources of food. Your new Friend looks like she has quite a story to tell and a desire to learn much more.

  6. Friend the cow… (o:
She is lucky to get to live in a pasture… hopefully she isn’t pumped with ‘stuff’ that ends up being bad for us. You can tell I watched Oprah with a show about our food. I need to change some things.

  7. Friend is an appropriate name. She sure looks like she would like to come visit and spend some time with you. I remember dairy cows fondly. I even love the smell of barns and cow poo.

  8. Hi Linda, Sorry I haven’t been around too much lately-trying to be wise with my time and also taking care of our little old dog…who keeps getting the runs. Oh well, such is life. I imagine you are really tired of being cold and snowy-seems like you’ve gotten hit harder than I have this year. Stay warm and thanks for your comments-they make me smile. Hugs to you.

  9. I think she is a beautiful girl… wouldnt mind having her to look at everyday. Do you think they would notice if she went missing?

Sure, everyone come for a visit. Actually, you all would be a welcome distraction, but bring your sleeping bags, because well, the guestroom went up in flames, too!

Till Wed, Evan and I are making due with a blow up mattress and two camp chairs… But no complaints here, its something…and thats always better than nothing.
