Winter Birds Making Way for Spring Birds

A winter storm is blowing in even as I write this.  The wind wrecked a little damage so Terry and I had to go back out and this time tie up the gated pipe.  The cows leave the pipes alone but the wind seems to think they are play things.

Look at all that sand in the ditch…it will be easy to take care of once we start irrigating.  The grandkids like it also so sometimes their parents come up and clean out the ditch for the sand pile.

The Red-Winged Blackbirds as coming back in droves!  I LOVE hearing their pretty songs.  I also saw two Robins while we were up there and four delightful flitting Bluebirds.  The Bluebirds don’t stay here, once we get too hot for them they move on further North.  I rejoice the minute I see them as I know it won’t be long now for more flowers-starting to pop-up weather.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

  1. We are a long way from having the red winged black birds back that is for sure. I wouldn’t mind having some of that sand myself, the hubby has an uncle that has a sand pit on his farm so we go there to get sand when we need it. You enjoy that nice weather!

  2. Tell those bluebirds to hang on to their tail feathers – we didn’t even make 0 today! I’m sure the groundhog lied and I am NOT happy! Here the bluebirds actually show up a little earlier than “spring” so I don’t think spring until I see or hear a meadowlark!

  3. Hope the winter storm isn’t too bad or lasts too long. The wind and blowing sand is a problem here, too.
I have a gazillion red-winged blackbirds here, too. They just came in this last week and do they love the sunflower seeds I have in my birdfeeders! The finches can’t really compete with them since blackbirds are so much bigger.
    Blessings!

  4. With the wind blowing the way it is around here, there should be plenty of sand in the irrigation ditch for the grandchildren. We’re also seeing more robins and bluebirds, although I haven’t seen any red-winged blackbirds. We’re supposed to get more rain and wind over the weekend, but fortunately no one is mentioning the s-word!

  6. You guys sure have a lot going on. I’m just trying to stay warm. We are a long way away from seeing and hearing any Robins or any other kind of Sring bird but I’m glad you are.

  7. So glad you’re getting some spring. That means warmer weather and a LOT of work down the road. It is so cheering to hear the birds singing making a racket as they gather and travel through. If you’ve got robins we should see them in a week or so. Yay!!

  8. I saw a couple rather befuddled robins here in Denver last week. They obviously haven’t looked at the calendar lately. March is the snowiest month. I’ll just keep putting out the seed for them.

  9. So far we have mostly the winter birds like the Junco’s, Cardinals and Jays, yet even these have a different ‘springy’ sound. I did hear a Robin last week when we had our first warming day. Now it is a white and cold scene outside, but the calendar says spring is three weeks away. Your ‘rainbow’ post reminded me that that sign was God’s promise in scripture to never again destroy earth by a flood. And he also said that as long as the earth remains, there will be seedtime. See Genesis 8:22 So we have the promise of spring and I’m ready. Thanks for the post.

  11. Those winds are strong… and relentless!
So many blackbirds in the tree. I’m like you, love their song and it’s always in the middle of the night. I always forgive their scratching up the mulch – fair exchange
