Third Cutting of Hay

Our third cutting of hay has been hauled in and stacked for sale.

The Delta Elevator has called and wants ALL that we can sell him, which works out fine for us.

We were very concerned we wouldn’t be able to get it in before the rain starts.  But we made it….50% chance this afternoon.  FINGERS CROSSED FOR IT TO COME!

The smoke is still here, which means people are still experiencing horrible wild fires.  My heart goes out to them.  Maybe our potential rain will actually come from there and the fires will be put out.

Every evening we go to sleep with the smoke and every morning we wake up with the smoke….I keep hoping that rain, and more rain, and even more rain will help everyone effected by the terrible fires but helping put them out.

Everyday is showing more and more yellow leaves on the trees.

Fall is here!

Linda

  1. How close are you to the fires? We’re starting our second cutting but only for some emergency square bales for a possible bad winter and we can’t get in the pastures to the cattle. We use most of the second cutting for pasture just before the snows/wet weather begins. That way we don’t have to start feeding as early. We have more yield this year than normal and we had about 80 round bales left over from last year.

  2. Hi Linda, Glad you got the hay done –before the rains came!!!!!! That is GREAT….
Feels like Fall here also –since our temperatures are milder. AND–some of the trees are turning… OH–how I love Fall. Don’t ever remember experiencing Fall in August before… August is usually our hottest month…. We do need some rain –but having the milder temperatures help….

    Hugs,

  3. Our neighbor just cut his pasture next to us. He only got 28 bales (round ones), as the pasture isn’t very big. He has pastures all around here though.

By the way……thanks so much for the poppy seeds!! You did send them didn’t you?????

  4. Glad you got a third cutting–not a generous year for others. Hope the rains come now. Someone pinched the color out of those leaves.

  6. Yea! you made it before the rain!! Now hope you get and the wildfire areas get lots of rain and replenish the soil! Selling all of your hay to one place sure makes it simpler, doesn’t it?
Cooler weather here, also. Am enjoying mornings of 60 degrees. So ready for Fall.
    Blessings!

  7. Great to know that harvest #3 was successful and better news is that you already have a buyer.
    That is a great relief.
I don’t think anywhere in the World did August appear this year, certainly not in Australia.
So you have an early “Fall” (Autumn) and we are really already in Spring!
Back burning has started early as the undergrowth from the early rains this year, have
left an abundance of lush undergrowth. The rural communities are estatic with the amount
of fodder and all the crops are going great guns.
Some steady rain would now be most welcome.
Cheers and congratulations of the harvest.

  10. Linda, glad to see you and Terry got that third cutting before it rained.
Also, I really enjoyed the article on the Hillman Building and Hollands Department Store. I remember Mr. Swanson showing us how that cable system worked and letting us pull the handle to shoot the money up to the cashier in the “balcony” overlooking the sales floor.
And of course, thanks for the nostalgic connection you provide to Home on the Western Slope. Enjoy the quakies for me.

  11. We saw so much beautiful hay on our trip – I was so envious. Especially when I came back and saw my poor, dry pasture.
I’m glad you got a third cutting and how great that it is put up and that it is sold!

  12. Hope you all get rain, for the fires and the growing. We’re such a small planet, that it’s impossible not to feel involved with your worries. Here in New Zealand, in spite of the coldest winter, now we’re getting an early spring, lambs leaping, plum blossom buzzing with bees, and the trees budding up….. Go well…

  13. Good looking hay and put up without a rain. Yippie Kiaa. That makes for good keeping feed.
How much a ton does hay bring there? It is $300/ton in Iowa because of short supply due to no rain…
