I loved the Quaking Aspen trees….my maternal grandfather and grandmother (Bill and Ruth Thomas) would take my brother and I camping and fishing – sometimes even for a weekend — on Grand Mesa. He loved the Quaking Aspen trees and would always say he wanted to buried in a pine box with a Quaking Aspen for a tombstone and wildflowers all over his grave.
I love those trees also, more than likely it was his love of the trees that gave me my love of them — grandparents give so many things to their grandchildren don’t they? And the things they give are never with strings attached.
Anyway, as soon as we get the water set we are off to Imogene Pass—this is a old, old pass between Ouray and Telluride (To Hell You Ride) for a little day of four-wheeling.
I will be taking you with us…so off I go now to get ready. The lunch is packed and so is the pick-up!
Linda
that sounds fun…here I am ready to go…..but is there a reason why they are called Quaking…seems a strange name so maybe there is a reason

I love the Aspen, too. They are so beautiful in the Fall, too. Have a wonderful day 4-wheelin!! I want to see pictures when you get home!
And, yes, we do learn so much just by observing our grandparents. My maternal grandfather gave me the love of outdoors and nature. My paternal grandfather was the picture of patience and gentleness. Both grandfathers were farmers, so, of course, the love of the land from each.
Happy travels….blessings!

That is all great and glad you and others can enjoy it. Thank you for the pictures for those who cannot be there. I am also not fond of heights. 5 foot ladder is as high as I get. ha
My niece loves to climb and hike and get in places that few can. That she did herself, none of the family ever did those things. Just enjoyed farming.Sometimes I think she is doing things that the Great , Great , Great Grandparents did. You are right about Grandparents giving the little ones love of things or ideas. We have a Boy 11 and Girl 6, just like their Dad and Mom love learning everything they can.
The alfala here is doing good. We are south of Wichita , Kansas, 10 miles north of the Oklahoma Line. Wheat harvest is done and the corn is looking wonderful. We are looking at temps. in the 100’s for awhile now.Nights are in the 70s.Have fun on your trip. Sharon and Harry Drake July 9, 2013.

You are up very early this morning. Enjoy your day.
I fully agree with you on quaking aspen which we call trembling aspen. They are very important ecologically but most people look on them as junk trees.

Glad you all are able to get out and have some FUN… Your work is so hard —and we all need leisure days!!!!! Hope you’ll go back to the area where those Aspens are in the Fall –and take pictures of their beautiful yellow colors… I remember when we were in CO last Sept. –and that was the first time we had seen blooming Aspens… AWESOME.
Have fun today.

OH I love Quacking Aspen .Learned abotu them in the Native American work here with the Ojibiwe and love the sound and actually they are a totem of my son, born in February……hushing sounds….soothing sounds. We have some here as well.
I love the legacies of our grandparents too and treasure the memories of all that I leanred from the unconditional love of Frank and Hannah, originally from the Black Forest of Germnay, on the South Side of Chicago. The case of Canfield’s pop in the basement for us grandkids, ,the four o’clock flowers we made fairies out of ,and placed in the birdbath, and the peace of the peonies and phlox at 9015 South Racine Avenue, formed the thoughts I have today and I am so grateful for them :Non competitive, and peacful, loving their neighbor as themselves, they walked the talk. Thank you for your reminder, and looks like a fun day for you in the bush. Enjoy!!! and thank you! Merri

Just love the aspens. They are so pretty with their white bark. It is funny the things grandparents pass on. And at the time we never realize what that was until you are older and go “Hey, so that’s where I got that!” Have a wonderful adventure today. 🙂

We call them trembling aspens. They are much maligned by people and almost considered weeds . Aspen are very important to the eco system.

My dad used to talk about the aspen when I was a boy. My parents had their honeymoon on Grand Mesa back in 61. Some of the oil paintings my dad did showed the aspen. When I was a boy I would stare at the painting of a moutain medow with deer grazing at the edges and imagine that I was back there. Thanks for bringing me memories of my dad.
