Now There is a Sick Goat February 5, 2014

Now Misty has a sick goat, which means, now I have another patient.  She’s a sweet old goat, but no matter how sweet she is she will not be coming into my house at night.  🙂   It’s okay as she has a really nice goat house and her sister/friend.

But every morning I go down to administer a shot to the soft furry old lady.  She and her sister each get some yummy graham crackers before I give the shot, then lots of pets and rubs on the back bone where it gets itchy and is hard to scratch.

The hurt hen is doing better.  She sleeps inside every night and then goes out to the hen house during the day.

When I get up at night to put wood in the fire I always stop and talk to her in her little laundry basket night nest.  She coos and purrs at me in a sleepy in hen voice.  Then I wish her a sweet goodnight and go on back to bed myself.

It’s a good thing I’m an early riser because she IS a chicken after all, and does love to get up early.  Soon after breakfast I take her back to the hen house, turn on the red heat lamp so she can adjust to not being in the big house.

She is eating and drinking and healing very well.  I must wait now until her pen feathers start to come back in, which will be a long ways out yet, before I can bring the little black hen over for company.  Until then we will continue this new little routine.

We had lots of snow yesterday, colder temperatures last night, then tonight (by 5 o’clock) the weatherman says another snow storm will make it’s way in here and be here for a length of time.

The storm leaving our area was just beautiful.  Most of our storms arrive from the west (southwest, west, or northwest) and head off toward the east or northeast area.

Snowing-on-Grand-Mesa

This is the storm as it pushes itself over Cedaredge and Grand Mesa heading to some other part of the county.

Well, I must be off now and go take care of the goat, haul in more firewood and in general just get busy!

Your farm friend,

Linda

  1. Beautiful clouds in that picture…great job! You are turning into a regular Vet Assistant, aren’t you?! Hope little miss goat gets well real soon. I know your little hen is loving all the attention!

  2. You are the real deal, Linda! As a lifetime city girl, sitting in my garden apartment planning to read and watch TV all afternoon, watching the snow removal guys outside and wondering if my shoes will get wet walking to the garage, I cannot tell you how this daily visit to your world fascinates me. I like to imagine I could be a farm person, going with the flow, knowing how to handle situations, being so productive…. And NO. I am NOT the real deal. You’re my idol.

  3. You are the best animal doctor! I have handed out the chicken advice to you gave me to a few friends now. We are in the midst of an ice storm right now. Can’t believe we still have power. It is out all over the place.

  4. Pretty snow picture. Hope the goat gets better. Glad little hen is feeling good. (spoiled) 🙂
Hope you guys don’t get our wind! Sheesh! Its 11* with winds at 20mph! Not good on the new calves! The barn is getting FULL! 4 heifer pairs, 2 ready to go, a cow who lost a calf and an orphan calf. We are going to try to hook baby and mama up. 🙂

  5. So glad that the little hen is getting better. I’ve been trying to think what I used long ago when I had chickens. I think it was ichthamole (I can’t spell). Any way, it’s black sticky stuff and it seemed like if I covered all red, pecked areas the other hens would leave well enough alone. However, I think bringing Little Hen in for the night is much better. I have a picture in my head of the hen in her basket cooing at you as you get wood.!
-25ish here this morning and never above 0 during the day. I’m looking for -30+ tomorrow morning. Brr!
Sending graham cracker wishes and magical thoughts to the goat. I do like goats!
    Stay warm!

  7. Any good farm wife is part nurse, doctor and mom to the animals in her care. Your creatures and your family are so blessed to have such a warmhearted and sympathetic lady.
