A few clouds have arrived in our area, the high, way up there, WAY, WAY up in the air winds pushing the clouds from somewhere in the far west…California to Utah and then to us..to fill our sky blocking the warming rays of the sun.
When the dogs and I went for our mid-night walk the stars were out and the sky was brilliant with their sparkling beauty. I almost tripped as I walked along with my head tiled back trying to find the different constellations…there was the Big Dipper (always very easy to see) I use it as my mooring point.
Around 8 o’clock in the evening it is in the east, then after mid-night sinking under the rim of Grand Mesa in the north west.
I really can’t remember the names of any of the others anymore, although, I used to know…way back when I was in high school —centuries ago.
Today we are a cold and cloudy late winter day. A jacket wearing day. At least right now. Maybe later we will warm up…only time will tell.
Yesterday was warm enough that the dogs spent most of it panting (and smiling). Terry and I worked without jackets in the afternoon–it was that warm…if you kept moving. He is building a irrigation box…one of the ditches that enters our place has created a huge hole in the ground…the hole works, but water keeps eroding it so the hole just keeps getting bigger and bigger. A cement box will with stand the constant of water and protect the earth around the ditch. We always want to protect the land. At the same time make our work load a little easier.
I got the wood pile sorted and stacked for next year…green wood here, dry wood there, and all the sticks and weeds and leaves under the wood racked.
I have a old pile of junk wood I need to sort and cut and get it in the firewood pile so I can use it up next winter. The old pile is made up of tree limbs, rotted off fence posts, an old building we tore down…junk wood, but we don’t want to just throw in a heap and burn it sending smoke spiraling into the air…we want to utilize it as heat for the house. So I continue to sort and cut and stack.
Other than ordinary everyday things nothing much going on here.
Your friend on a western Colorado farm,
Linda
Hi There, Isn’t it a great feeling to finally feeling as if Spring IS coming!!! We have a warmer day here also—although there is some cold/nasty weather south of us… Hopefully, it will just march right on by and miss us!
Have a Springy Day!!!

Betsy

Your photo of the sky is beautiful. It’s wonderful to be able to shed a heavy coat when working outside. The yard is reminding me of all the things I need to get done.

The rain it raineth every day here…or rather every night. We wake up most mornings now to a wet day that moves to sunshine later in the day and back to overcast clouds in the late afternoon. I really love this time of year.

Our junk wood is saved at the sugar house for making maple syrup which will happen this weekend or next depending on the weather. Stay warm.

Delightful ordinary everyday things. My wood shed is bone dry EMPTY. After i have worked on the milking parlour today and before the vet we re going back to the old farm to cut out some more dead hedge wood. Though when it is sunny the house does not need a fire, all windows are angled towards late winter sun.. Have a lovely day.. jackets on for us still but soon.. soon.. c

With as much wood as you burn, do you ever clean your chimney or stove pipe? How often?

Lovely photos. We’re new to the front range and really have a mountain lion problem. I assume since you take midnight walks, that’s not a problem on the California Mesa?

Orion is always the first constellation I find. The 3 stars of his belt jump out as soon as I look up. Being so close to big cities like Newark and NY, there aren’t always a lot of stars visible because of the reflected light. Your night sky must be amazing!

As usual, beautiful photos and a glimpse both into your world and everyday life. I love the doggies sunning themselves and trying to fool us into thinking that it must be really warm.
Yes, we are approaching “real spring”. When I lived in Australia, the season changes followed the calendar month – so 1st March is the first day of autumn – yeah, we are all upside down, I know… But here in the far north of the globe, I’ve discovered that there is in fact eight seasons, not the four I was used to:
Winter from December to April.
Spring-winter is during April and early May
Spring is late May until mid June
Spring-summer is in late June.
Summer covers July to mid August
Summer-Autumn is late August
Autumn is from September until the end of October
Autumn-winter is the month of November

You have had it horrible. I hope the earth tilts even more so the arctic air will just push itself to the sea instead of rushing down, down down through Canada and into 1/2 of the USA!

This has been the worst winter for a very long time….the whole country is suffering the affects of it. I have a friend in PA who lost calves during their last storm. And it never seems to end! Our temps have been 35 – 45 below wind chill.
Today it is 39! And melting. Now the mud, but I can deal with the mud if it would only stay in the 30s…how is everyone else out there faring?
Happy Saint Patricks Day to everyone! I haven’t picked up my corned beef yet…last year I made a huge boo boo and bought the wrong thing…it was boring and dull. I was so ready for a nice corned beef with mustard! Cabbage, carrots, and potatoes! Instead it was a tough old shoe leather hunk of beef! Maybe I need new glasses? Or to pay attention better…LOL
But I can tell you this! I won’t make that mistake again! 😀

I am sure Autumn (Fall) has well and truly arrived here – our seasons start on the first of the months. You have certainly got into the spirit of St. Patrick’s day early (17th March ???).
Constellations: I can find “The Southern Cross” and sometimes I can find “The Cowyard” –
this one was a favourite of my granddads as we sat in the Baron River at night in the hot summer months. It is a square constellation with a gate thingy on it. I have not been star gazing for years – I must have a look tonight (clouds permitting) and see if I can find “The Cowyard” and recall those night swimming and cooling off days of the 1950’s!! ha ha.

Your trees have a little spring color! I have seen a tint of green in all this brown. It’s been near 60 here. Warm, windy and wet. Perfect weather for growing grass.

Your pictures are really pretty, Linda! You are such a busy bee right now with all your sorting, etc.
We had a warmish day here IF you out of the wind. It actually got to 69* but the wind was quite chilly.
Blessings!

I know what you mean about the constellations. I remember the big dipper and Sagittarius; but so many stars have dimmed since you and I were in school. 😉
Glad to hear you got some warm weather!
Have a good weekend. ♥
