A Lovely Spring Day March 23, 2014

After a nasty cold blustery day yesterday we woke-up to a lovely early spring day this morning.

Just perfect!

Yesterday Terry and I (and Boomer–Fuzzy stayed out the house and rested) — got the very last of the pipe put into the ditch and the pipe covered back up. Two days of hard, intense work, but we made it!  Sure is a nice feeling.

(I loved how the sun captured the dust)

After supper Terry went back out and rolled for a couple of hours.  He has a few more acres to roll, but he is gaining on that project as well.

o  My foot is healing…slowly, but surely.  The swelling has gone down enough I can see where the nail went in and where it came out.  Night is the worst, but by morning I can get to going again.

I thank all of you who have written to ask how I am doing.

The worst of the HUGE projects are now starting to get done.  This time of year is always the hardest.  For ranchers the hardest is when they start calving (at least I think it would be the hardest)….for us it is the late winter/early spring— get the ground ready to start water and to plant.  Of course once you plant you have the concern of getting the seed up and making sure it gets a good start.  Deadlines, deadlines…in any job any place anywhere, it is always the deadlines.   Nine days and the water is supposed to be in the canal.  Nine days left to get the ground ready to start water….

If ‘the creek don’t rise and the wind don’t blow’ (as my beloved maternal grandfather used to say)  We will make it!  (Is there a song like that out there somewhere, seems like there is.)

Anyway…today is lovely!

Your friend on a western Colorado farm,

Linda

  1. I love spring work. Not much happening here yet but it’s coming. Your photos are wonderful!
Pickles says to tell Fuzzy that it’s good to have one dog stay at the house. She always does. The Gus follows me around for ranch work. Pickles “guards” the yard.
So glad your foot is getting better!

  2. I really like the light you captured in the photos of Terry working the fields — very beautiful. I’m also glad to hear that your foot is healing, and I hope you will soon be as good as new. Heavens knows you’re really going to be busy for the next few weeks.

  3. That ditch seemed like an awful big job. Glad ya got er done. Love the dusty tractor picture. Sure looks like summer in that picture. Maybe I am thinking too far ahead? Naw. 🙂
We will be processing the replacements tomorrow. That oughta give my wrist a good work out! I’ll most likely be on the back of my horse pushing em up the alley into the barn. Can’t wait to get back on my pony!
    Have a beautiful spring Sunday.

  4. Daddy says, “If the Good Lord is willin’, and the creek don’t rise…” Same sentiment – must be the Arkansas version!
Love that light, it just makes me feel warm…Soon enough, we’ll ALL be done with winter!

  5. Your photography is amazing – Photo #1 says it all.
Spot on “Jan” – there would be changes in attitude.
I am sure Terry will be ready for the water people.

There is “suppose” to be plenty of rain this week,
but I am getting sick of hearing this. I am rapidly coming
to the impression that the weather forecasters are getting
their “A’s” mixed up – Angola, Argentina or Austria!!!
You can throw into the mix, the US state of Arizona or even Afghanistan !!!
    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah – c’mon rain!

  6. … and the other thing about farming life is that you can’t just take a break. The cycle goes on, there’s a time and season for everything, and there’s always something to do. It’s a hard life, but rewarding, I think. Hope your foot continues to improve. K

  7. I don’t know much about farming (only what you’ve taught me here) but I do know that changeable Colorado weather. That’s so typical — blustery and cold one day, beautiful spring the next.

I am glad you’re getting caught up a little with all the work (and it sounds like a lot of work… a LOT!)

  8. Yup! You’re right! The song is “If the Lord be willin’ and the creek don’t rise”. We used to sing that song in Sweet Adelines….a ladies barbershop chorus! A great song! Wow …. you folks are really working hard…it’s amazing to see all that you’re accomplishing! So sorry about your foot…I’m surprised that you’re doing so well with it so soon. thanks for the great pictures and great blog!!!

  9. Wonderful pics LInda… and hope your foot continues to improve… It only seems like yesterday that you were worrying about the date of the water and how much last year… time like an ever-rolling stream … never stops!

  10. Absolutely lovely photos, Linda. I feel as though I’m right there with you. I hope the foot starts to heal quickly. Often with these things the frustration of not being able to do things is what annoys the most (after the lack of sleep!), especially at such a busy time as spring. We seemed to have swapped weather with you. After a few glorious days of spring sunshine and vivid blue skies and the start of cherry blossoms flowering, we are back to gale force winds and torrential rain. It’s a roller-coaster ride this year for sure. But I’ll spend the day making more suet balls for the birds and planting out some of my seeds in their starter boxes – and dream of warmer weather 🙂
