The Start of April is a Cold Start–April 2, 2014

So far our start into April is a tad chilly.  Very cold bully winds, with rain, sleet, snow showers; if I have to guess the apricots are pretty much gone for another year.  We may get a few, only time will tell.

Wind-and-stormThe sun had a hard time shining through the cloud cover this morning. This looks more like a Halloween photo than an early morning photo in April. 🙂

The water has not made it to us yet.  That does not mean that it isn’t on it’s way, just that it isn’t here yet.  Since our irrigation water comes from Blue Mesa Reservoir in Gunnison (two hours away by car) or out of the Ridgeway Dam (1 1/2 hours away by car) it takes a long time for it to get to us.  We are close to the end, just a few more farms below us then our irrigation water flows into the Gunnison River.

We are very close to being ready to start irrigation. If you want to see a post about starting the water here is an old post.

Sunset-blooms I leave you now, with a lovely photo of the apricot blooms as the sun was setting last night.

  1. I wish I could send you some of our warm April weather. But on second thought, I’m enjoying it too much! I just hope April warm ups for Colorado as it has (so far) for Tennessee.

  2. Oh! I just noticed that senior hiker is writing you from Tennessee! That’s where I’m from. Chattanooga to be precise. I heard it was warm. Happy spring, Tennesseans! (It’s beautiful here in Italy too. Trees in blossom everywhere. Warm, blue skies. I love it.)

  3. Beautiful pics. I sure hope those 70 degree days show up soon for you guys. Cameron is out spraying 10 acres, so we can replant it back to grass. We know nothing of farming! I should get pic of our spray tractor. Lol! All I can say is it beats walking!

  4. Cool and grey and misty here too. Warmer by the end of the week…..maybe!
We are a long way from turning on water yet. But then, we have a lot of moisture in the ground.
The Gus wants to go for a swim in spite of the weather, so off we go.

  5. April is the cruelest month as the poet said, Linda. Thanks for that info about the irrigation – so interesting.

  6. Winter is certainly dragging it’s heels in Colorado. It’s cold here as well (around 37°F in the day and 26°F at night) with a cold wind but at least it’s sunny, which makes everything so much more bearable. When I look out of the window it looks almost like summer. Almost… 🙂

And you have blossoms! We’ve lots of early spring bulbs, but no blossoms yet (and certainly no apricot trees – it’s too far north to grow them). I’m so looking forward to the lovely cherry blossoms when they begin.

  7. After a lovely spring like March when I was tempted to put out tomato plants, our April has turned chilly and rainy too. The lesson is never to rush the season. Sorry about the apricots, but at least you get a beautiful tree for most of the year.

  8. When the water reaches your place it is always cause for celebration! I hope you get some apricots…take a paint brush and transfer some pollen, I wonder if you have a variety that has to be cross pollinated..then take some pollen from one tree and take it to the others flowers:)
