Heat! But I’m not Complaining! —- Sunday, July 20, 2014

It’s warm here.  We had 102* yesterday afternoon.  The dogs and Terry languished melting into the house;  laying around in the family room while the swamp cooler cooled them down.

I worked at keeping the yard watered then around four o’clock decided I would just have to wait and start all over again as soon as the temps dropped back down to 98* or so.  The heat did pound right into me as I walked here and there moving hoses.  It was hot enough walking made a person feel like they were moving in slow motion.

Red-OrangeThe day had started with huge promise of being hot and it kept it’s promise.

Moving through the growing corn to set water re-confirmed that we WERE in July.  The biting bugs hovered and dug right in for a lush rich drink of  blood as we moved from one spot to another.

Finally we hopped back onto the four-wheelers and drove through the almost to tassel (but not just yet) corn into the wildly green pasture at the very top of the farm…here the mosquitoes and biting gnats gave way to swarms of more hungry bugs…tiny horse flies, deer flies and giant horse flies, no-see-ums, you name it.  But the air was cool and fresh in the pasture so it made the flies seem endurable.

Yesterday, was also Delta’s summer celebration –Deltarado Days.  We only attended the Parade, the Car Show and the Tractor Pull (I sure you knew we would attend those last two…:) )

Sun-settingBy evening and the last change of the irrigation water we had cooled down to a very nice 88*.  The night cooled even further down with dew setting on around four this morning.

Terry is out baling hay right now.  Although he won’t be out there very long because this day is heating up also.

Normally we don’t really work on Sunday…we treat it as a ‘day of rest’, but now and again somethings must be done…baling the hay when all things come together to create the bale is one of those things.

Thank each of you for your continued friendship across the miles.  Having my internet back is sure nice!

Your farm friend,

Linda

  1. Know how you feel about the heat! We’ve been 100+ for about 10 days! Had a nice cool down now. The lawn is starting to come back. Now if I could get rid of the darn grasshoppers! They have been terrible this year.
Sometimes ya gotta get stuff done when the gettins good! 🙂
    Have a beautiful Sunday!

  2. Hot, hot and dry here, too. Hotter than we have ever had, in fact. I love it!!! Skies are smoky from the wildfires, though.

  3. Its okay to complain, Linda. Some people and pets actually get real sick from the heat. I, too, have been out watering and trying to save the yard and garden from sweltering heat near 104 most days but its cooled off some….nineties. I believe the warmth of this type is unusual for this time of year. It feels like August with heat and humidity. I feel for anyone out working in this heat. It can actually make you sick.

  4. I’d probably be complaining at 102°! We’ve had cooler weather for several days, but your hot weather is on the way. I hope Terry gets the baling done before the heat gets to him. It would be nice if rain held off until he was finished as well.

  5. You’ll hate me for this, Linda — here in Dallas we had our third day in a row with a high in the low 70s yesterday. Set several new records. Back into the 90s today and 100s by end of the week. Good that you have that swamp cooler. Growing up on Garnet Mesa all we had were fans, Kool-Ade and shade trees. And it did get hot.
I’m glad you went to the Deltarado Days parade and the other events. That’s one of my best memories of Delta. I rode on a couple of floats (church and Forest Service) as a kid and then marched in the high school band.
Good to have you back with reliable internet service. Here’s to a good hay crop and cooler weather soon.

  6. Sure glad you’re back steadily now Linda….but you can keep that heat. Ugh…..hope we don’t get it! Sorry to hear about all the biting insects too. We only have the mosquitoes so far! I always look forward to your blog and pics! They’re great!

  7. WOW! on your photos. Summer does give us some outstanding sunsets. Try and keep all that heat in mind because in a few months we’ll be looking for our long socks and fuzzy underwear. Stay cool even if you have to spend extra time in the sun.

  8. Oh my, Linda… 102° is hot – even though it’s a dry heat! It’s been in the 80’s here. I am a wimp with the heat. Glad you guys are getting the hay in! Bet those beans are growing good 🙂 Stay cool! )))hugs(((

  9. Glad to see you back, I feel for you I lived most of my life in that kind of heat etc. I finally threw in the towel this year and moved to the coast. Sending you cool thoughts. Dawn

  10. I am glad you are managing to get your hay in – even if you are having to do it under such extreme conditions – Sunday or not. In the middle of winter you will look back to these scorching days and be thankful I suppose – but I must say I am glad it is not that hot over here.
