Last week a little storm played over the Uncompahgre Plateau…(Un-come-pah-gray).
As I stood taking a photo of the sunset and the pink rain cloud — a wedge of returning geese passed over us…calling to all who could hear…”we have returned, winter in near.”
As always your friend,
Linda
We have flocks of magpie geese passing overhead too, but their message is different here: “summer’s coming, weather’s warmer, let’s get back to our breeding grounds and make as much noise as we can while we’re doing it!”

Australian native geese, black and white, easily mistaken for Canada geese except that the colours are arranged differently. This link shows what they look like:

My pleasure! I’m a big bird lover, keeping a list of all the ones I spot in the garden. I’m deeply jealous of your hummingbirds; the closest we get are sunbirds, tiny nectar eaters about the length of my little finger, in olive and bright yellow, but they don’t truly hover.

I had never heard of them before! Thank you!

No worries! I love questions about birds; I’m not quite a nerd, but I find them endlessly fascinating…

Are you a twitcher? : )
Did you see my post about the kingfisher? I was blown away by how beautiful they are, and how small!

Head on over to Kate’s blog…she has some amazing birds on there!

I’m not a twitcher in the sense that I simply observe, rather than chase them down. We have some sensational birds here. Below is a link to a post I put up earlier about some of them; Linda used one of the images in her rainbow series – you’ll see why if you click through!:
I haven’t seen your kingfisher post, but I’ll go hunting for it. They are spectacularly colourful for northern hemisphere birds, and a close relative of our own noisy kookaburras, but as you say, a whole lot smaller.

Wait – I know a country song by that name! Is that local to you?

No two hours away. It can be a nightmare to drive, but much improved from years past.

I love it! My dad had this on an 8-track of trucker music. It’s the only country I truly appreciate! I still say things like ‘around and down and around and down’ and ‘pick us up with a stick and a spoon’!
I heard there is a place at the bottom of the pass that has memorialised the song with a truck half-through the building – is that true?

Such a beautiful header, Linda! And the ‘pink rain’ cloud! We had a strong storm come thru late last evening and during the night….2″ of rain and tons of wind. Wish we could have had your pretty pink rain! A gray day today with early morning fog that has now dissipated. It’s soup weather!!!
Blessings!
