My name is Linda Brown. I live on a farm on the western slope of Colorado, in the high mountain desert. I’ve lived here all my life, hailing back four generations on my father’s side. Today I blog about our farm, the everyday activities that keep the farm going. I also write about my thoughts and dreams and goals. On Friday’s I always write about TLC Cai-Cai. Toads

We are having a lovely spring full of toads!  Toads are neat creatures!  The toad that lives on our farm with us is the Great Basin Spadefoot.

 

 

 

 

The Nursery is Ready and Waiting

I am very excited!  The new baby chicks come today!  I have their nursery ready and waiting.  Nurseries for baby birds are called ‘brooders’. 

Brooders need to be sanitary, water-proof and draft proof and easy to clean. The heat lamp needs to be red, to cut down on the chicks from pecking on each other.

A thermometer is placed in the brooder, under the lamp, to check for heat-95degrees the first week, and then reduced by 5 degrees per week after that.

New Corn

The corn is growing!  A corn plant will fully expand about every three days during early stages of growth.  As the days get warmer then growth accelerates to two days. Two leaves appear about the same time, creating a collar effect.

We now have acres of corn, rowing out!

 

Pheasant Damage

The pheasants LOVE to eat corn seed.  They scratch up the growing seed and have a feast.

Something must have frightened the pheasant off, for it forgot to eat this seed.
