The Middle of Summer

Terry finished cultivating the corn and the pinto beans.

He likes to use the 730 because the clutch is a hand clutch and not a foot clutch.

There will be one more cultivation of the pinto beans, but the corn is too tall now.  As soon as the bean shoot feelers all tractor work is done until harvest.  The only thing left (on tractor work) is making alfalfa into hay.

Of course we will continute to irrigate, changing the water every 8 hours.  Water is short, with reports that it could get shorter.

It’s hot.  But we are having some moisture flowing in from Mexico after noon.

We cool down when it comes in which is really nice.

But we heat back up after the storm moves on.

That’s summer for you in our part of the high mountain desert!

Here’s how I cultivate! 🙂  This hoe never seems to leave my hand…I have it my yard, in the garden, and helping remove Canada Thistle, Star Thistle, Sticker Weed, Nodding Thistle, and other nasty stuff, which gets between the bean plants.  Once the beans shoot feelers I won’t have to be out there, but until then….

Summer is lots of work, but I would rather have summer than winter.  Terry, now, he would rather have cold, dark, dreary, drab winter.  Oh, oops!  I think those are my words.

The Fourth of July is tomorrow.   (and then by Tuesday they should have the part to fix my internet receiver! YEA!)

Happy 4th, everyone!

Linda

  1. Hi Linda
Yes Happy 4th July day – I can celebrate it here today and then have the USA version tomorrow!
I get two for the price of one!
Some of the city hotels have 4th July celebrations for the ex-pat US people and the backpackers etc.
I went to one once – great fun – but far too much bourbon!!!
Having been in the USA in 1976 for the “big big” celebrations, I sure know what the day means for
citizens of your great country. You have fun – OK!
It is amazing how dry that earth is – you must have a big and quick “run off”. You should borrow some of Linda of
A’s swamp water!!!!! However, I think the mossies can stay put – ha ha!
    Cheers

  2. I love the old JD tractor…it’s like the first one I ever learned to run but I can’t say as I miss the hand clutch…OR THE CAB 😉 You cultivate like I do but at least it’s fairly accurate…if I’ve got my glasses on.

  3. Hi Linda, Sounds like summer is in full-swing at your farm… Things like everything is working to plan –isn’t it???? Glad you got some much-needed rain. We are desperate for rain here —and there’s none in sight… AND out hot temps are coming back next week… It’s going to be a long long summer I think…

I don’t like summer and definitely prefer winter. Of course, when we had winter —I remember saying how much I was ready for some summer…. Never satisfied!!!! ha ha

    Have a wonderful 4th weekend.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  4. Great pics! Now tomorrow, you get to have the whole day off. Have a good ole’ fashioned Fourth of July picnic and a lot of rest. Or something. 🙂

  5. Hubby must be very old school to prefer the hand clutch. Your 730 has been around and is a testament to the longevity of these machines if taken care of properly. Dad farmed a quarter with a JD 50. I am not particularly happy with some of the aspects of my two JD’s. Happy 4th to as well.

  6. A farmer’s work just doesn’t stop much for summer holidays. Hope you can take a few moments to enjoy your independence. 😉 We were always right in the middle of first cutting hay. Many years my brother and I would climb on the top of the granary to watch the fireworks display in the next town. Too much to do for the parents to stop working in the field and milking to take a day off. Didn’t ruin us, and we make up for it big time now.

The bean crop looks great and good luck teaching those thistles a lesson. Did the skunk come back?

  7. Great farm shots just like out of a picture book. It sure is a lot of hard work but very rewarding to see the crops grow and produce.
