I love Graveyards. I like spending time in the peace and silence of cemeteries
There is just so much history there. So many lives that have made up this wild and wonderful world we live in
I also love family research
History, Genealogy, cemeteries all rolled up in one place. Pretty Nice.

Oh my goodness.
The light on that angel.
I so agree with you and find it heartening that others find cemeteries peaceful rather than sad.
Have you visited the old cemetery in Como Colorado outside of South Park?
Years ago (early 70’s)I found the tombstone of a little 13 year old – Daisy Stark…
I revisited it a few years ago. Still there. Its carved daisies still blooming in the clear mountain air.

Me too !! I want to stop at every one. You can’t do that if someone is along because it can take awhile sometimes. Leadville’s is very interesting. Many are as well though. It’s fun!

Nice photos! We have really, really old graveyards here. Some are so old that the tombstones have sunk into the earth, and the acid rain has eroded the stones away til they are very thin. In the city of Philly, there is the Christ Church burial plot, where there are 7 signers of the constitution, and Ben Franklin! Its very interesting to visit that place. Also, they would have these huge marble slabs in the ground, flat, and that each time another family member passed they would crack it open and add them, and etch their name on the slab. I guess they did that to make the most of limited space. Ok, sorry for such a looooong comment. 🙂 Maybe if we ever get down there again I will post pictures for you!

Nice job Linda and I’m with you – I enjoy geneology and have found that those that haunt graveyards (the living ones) photographing and cataloging headstones has helped me piece together much of my family history.

I loved going through the cemeteries when we lived in Virginia. I couldn’t believe how long the graves were there and still looked new. I love how they are so serene and well kept.

Alas ours is buried (no pun intended) so I’m not taking part this week. Great shots.

The lighting in your first photograph is amazing — and beautiful. Betsy really enjoys visiting old cemeteries as well. She’s also into family history. I’m more into general history and find these cemeteries fascinating as well.

There are some amazing headstones in the big cemetery in Hawick, with whole families listed. But some are so sad, as at the bottom it will say something like ‘3 children who died in infancy’ …. they obviously didn’t merit a headstone when they died, and just got added on to the parents’ grave. (unlike the modern part of the cemetery – you can spot a child’s grave from a great distance away, as they are covered in toys!)

I too love old cemetaries and have visited some really nice ones in my travels. Particularly like St. Bonaventure in Savannah, GA. Nice old monuments and the trees are draped with spanish moss. The Bird Girl statue from the book/movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” was there until too many tourists visited and it was moved.

Those are the most unique markers! It’s so interesting to see the differences in the regions of the States and around the world. Yes, some think cemeteries are creepy, but I too find them calming…and just plain interesting!

I enjoy grave yards. When our town had a birthday the historical society did a cemetery walk. Local people dressed the period of the stone they stood by and as you walked pas they would tell you local history of that time mixed in with their personal and family history. It was very interesting.
