Sunday Stills—From the Heart

The Sunday Stills assignment this week is in honor of Valentine’s Day….  something from the heart.

When I was a child my Momma always decorated for Valentine’s Day.  And it seemed she was always the room mother in charge of this sweet and romantic holiday.  One year she created a castle out of cardboard boxes and poster board, then she decorated it with crepe paper and lace doilies and beautiful pink and read hearts.

This lovely castle sat on it it’s very own table at our tiny country school house (only 8 to 10 children where in my class from First Grade through the Sixth).  Into the slot at the top of the castle every child placed their Valentines…some were store bought (if your parents had money) but most were hand-made.

This lovely little castle has sat in my mind ever since.  Once in awhile I try to recreate it, but I always come up short.  I guess, for it to be correct, it needs her loving touch.

My valentine decorations aren’t as fancy as hers, but they make me feel ‘the spirit’.

Happy Sunday Stills Everyone!

  1. Nice! It seems like we don’t do anything for Valentines. It’s the Bossman’ moms birthday the day before so we take her out and call it for both but it’s not the same.

  2. I also went to a small rural school and we had wonderful holiday traditions. There were 80 kids in 8 grades when I went to Cosumnes River Elementary. There were 350 when my son attended the same enlarged, citified school. They didn’t trade valentines anymore because “someone might get their feelings hurt.” I don’t recall anyone getting their feelings hurt back in the 1950’s. We all cared about each other and appreciated everyone for their own particular skills. Jose might have just come from Mexico and didn’t even have shoes, but he was a sweet boy and was the best at math. Douglas wasn’t very smart academically, but he could keep the projector running. Now it’s all just a big popularity contest that happens even when they avoid all the holidays and fun times. We still decorate our house for every holiday, right now I have red and pink towels and heart decorations in the bathroom. Next week it will be green for St. Patty’s Day. The bathroom is the easiest room to decorate.

  3. I have some good memories of Valentines Day as a child. How wonderful of your Mom for providing such awesome decorations for your class! I know you wish you still had that castle! Pretty glittery decorations to go with your roses in your home now.
