We finished putting the roof on the house…it has taken us three years.
That is because we do it ourselves with the help of our son-in-law, Kelly.
Although, we bought everything at once so we would match (a very good idea) we took our time to do the job.
The reason why—
- we had to do it between the pinto bean harvest and the corn harvest
- we are old and need help
- Kelly is an Assistant Principal at one of our local high schools and only has one fall break
- It isn’t possible to do it in winter (in our opinion)
- It isn’t possible to do it in the spring or the summer either, because of the crops
- WHAT!?!?! Hire it done?!?!?! (Terry’s words)
- A week is long-enough to work on an heavy, exhausting project
- I’m sure there are other reasons but these were enough for us
This the last year…three years and we are done!
First we had to tear off the old roof and shingles and fix any broken boards that may be up there.
Then came the new roof, the felt paper and the metal.

P.S. I should have painted, but I didn’t think about it until we were done and I could see how badly painting was needed.
I guess I will have to do it next summer….on a metal roof. Sigh!

At least metal will last a lot longer! We thought of metal but with our two story house and plus we had a flat top that we made into a peak before we did the roof made the house too tall to put steel on it, we don’t want to slide on a steel roof to the ground from that far up 😉 Yours looks real nice!

At least it’s done and will not make a fourth. A friend took 6-7 to refinish his cabinet doors. Looks real nice like your roof.

It must really feel good to have that job done. I always think of the painting part after the fact too. We finally “tinned” the eves and window trim…..I LOVE it.

There is no use rushing these things! I will tell you that when we decided to sell our house it took us three months to finish up all the projects we had going in order to put it on the market (and it was just a suburban ranch-house with a quarter of an acre, that’s all). So, yeah, we never rushed those DIY projects… and had I suggested it, Bill’s reaction to hiring somebody would have been just the same as Terry’s! It gets done, eventually!

Thank goodness, you must be sighing with relief and my builder says white or silver for the roof to reflect all that hot sun. He is very into Green building.. NZers.. what a thing.. c

Yea!!! you are all done! What a great feeling to get a huge job like that done. Looks like Terry and Kelly did a great job. My next roof will be a metal one, too. Too much hail in this area. I can’t tell from your pictures that the house needs painting, so don’t fret about it!
