Yesterday it started to rain.  It rained and rained, taking with it the lovely snow.

Mud-1

It rained and rained and rained…very miserable with a stiff nasty wind.

By nightfall we had nothing but mud

Mud-2

So we have gone from snow to mud in just one day!  That is always the bad part of snow…mud season!

I would have walked out to the fields to show you this, but I had to go upstairs and try and get some decent photos for you

Lots-1This is one of the corn fields from this summer

LotsWe have lots and lots of these huge wonderful birds (and bird poop).

2Last year I used to see them flying overhead and holler at them inviting them to come land on our farm—please come!  We will be good to you, the dogs don’t chase birds (unless it’s Hank) and I only want to take your photo! “Please come!” I would shout as they flew over my head.

Here is a very short video of the sounds they make (they are extremely noisy birds).  I took it while the grandchildren and I were taking a walk one cold winter day.  You can hear my voice and one of the grandchildren.

Now if the mud will just dry up…..

It’s still nasty and drizzly.  But we have BIRDS to entertain us!

Your friend on the farm,

Linda

  1. Perhaps our warmish weather will shift down your way. It’s a sweatshirt morning today. No jacket. Winter gloves are too warm.
It’s very nice of the birds to offer you photo ops and fertilizer!
Stay dry. Carry personal flotation device if you have to wander far into the mud. ! You don’t want to sink up to your ear lobes!

  2. wow..flying fertiliser! – the stuff I ordered for Kupa is: Triple Action Multi-Wormer, I ordered it from Jeffers Pet Supply. They are usually pretty fast. I have never used it before but It was recommended by a vet for large birds though it is safe for layers too. Here’s hoping that this is the problem. now I am off ot listen to your noisy birds. c.

  3. I tend to mark the seasons by the wildlife. Springtime brings the Sandhill Cranes to our country. We look forward to hearing them again every year. The huge flocks drop off a pair or two to their respective summer nesting sites. We get two pairs every year. Love the sound. Then in the Fall, the big flocks circle above us, just sunlight glinting off their wings, and call to the summer residents here. And then,……they are gone. It is always a sad time for me because I know that the long winter is on its way.

  4. Grrr, had a post all written and hit the wrong key and erased it all!! Anyway, love seeing your cranes…great picture of them. Would love to have them come to my corn stalks, but since this is the first year corn has been planted, I doubt they will find me.

The rain didn’t come here. Have the snow with about an inch of ice underneath. A norther just blew in a bit ago and it is now bitter cold and temps dropping. Hens are bedded and time for me to hunker down, too.

    Blessings!
