The Storm That Wasn’t –February 6, 2014

I had everything buttoned down and latched tight, three loads of wood sitting under the carport where it would stay dry, and nothing happened.

Evening

I’m not complaining.  I’m also glad to be ready than to not be ready.

It is snowing in the mountains, which is hand-clapping/jig-dancing good!

Terry talked to one of the water guys yesterday and he said there is enough snow at Taylor Reservoir to fill the reservoir when spring comes WITH 7 more feet besides. WONDERFUL!!    The next trick is for Mother Nature to dump enough snow in the Gunnison area to help bring up the Blue Mesa Reservoir to decent levels.

(While we are talking about water I really hope and pray that California starts to get water! I read where there is huge talk about not allowing farmers to have water to farm this coming year–instead sending all the water to the metropolis areas.  What a mess that is going to be…drinking water, but no food.  The price of food will skyrocket, farmers will go out of business, and land will sit idle allowing the soil to blow away!   I really hope that moisture comes soon for all of them!)

We are progressing here in the health department, the little goat is to have 8 shots, we are closing down on that number.  She always enjoys coming to me because  I have the graham crackers so giving the shot isn’t hard.  The little hen’s head is looking somewhat better. Her eye is starting to de-puff.  I saw a tiny crack of chicken eyeball looking at me as I applied her medicine today.  I was very concerned that the eye had been pecked out, but NO!  She still has her eye!

COming

So slowly, slowly we are wending our way to health and toward spring.  I’m into the count down for March-twenty-two days left in February.  February always seems like a loooooooong month to me.  Thank Heaven’s its a short month!

Your farming friend,

Linda

  1. Dear Nurse Linda…what a splendid job you are doing. Not only bringing little red hen back from the brink of death, but also giving crackers to a poorly goat in exchange for sticking a needle into him,. Florence Nightingale of Colorado. The lady with the lamp in the darkest nights, soothing all the animals at bedtime……..
it was the right thing to do to get prepared, even if it did not happen this time…it could have done and had you not been prepared you, d have been in a real right pickle…
surely Cal. Will do something about lack of water, they are on the coast, so why not have desalination plants and use sea water for the land. Like you say..I dread to think of what will happen without rain sometime
    stay safe my friend

  2. I like what misswhiplash says! Florence Nightingal! You are indeed! Glad that everyone is feeling better. Now, don’t you wish that you had a goat? Weed control you know. Very effective. And so entertaining.
It’s wonderful that things are looking up in the water department! I’m worried about Calif. too. So terribly dry!
We have -30 this morning. Cold for this time of year. I keep turning the heater down and it keeps coming on anyway. Propane is going to be a problem!
You have such lovely sky photos!

  3. Yes, I agree! Nurse Linda! So glad they are on the mend! Poor Miss Chicken. Good to be prepared. It was -29 here in the forest this morning….I am not going anywhere! The water news is wonderful for most of our state. Will keep fingers crossed for the Gunnison basin area… It is only Febuary 🙂

  4. Glad to hear the goat and the chicken are starting to heal. Yes the rain is not coming to us in the pacific northwest either…very dry so far this winter season. Hope all goes well today with your doctoring of your patients and also happy to hear no big snow storm hit you….enjoy your day!

  5. I’m glad the mountains around you are getting a decent amount of snow. I agree that things will really be bad if California doesn’t start getting some rain soon. I’m glad to hear that both your patients are doing well.

  6. Did you feel me dancing a jig for your water situation???? I DID!!!!! I did hear on TV today that CA is about to get some much-needed rain… At least, that’s a start.

I guess I’m a goat since I love graham crackers –and haven’t had one in years and years… Used to love them with Peanut Butter on them. YUM.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  7. We have so many people in California who think food comes from behind the doors at the supermarket. Unfortunately that includes many who make the laws. One of the lawmakers said (and I am not making this up) that farmers will have to grow crops that don’t need water.

We are getting a small storm today and another is hopefully off the coast. Food prices are bound to skyrocket all over the world if California farmers are denied water.

  8. Well done on your nursing efforts. I have several things to administer to Jazz, our 15 year old cat and that can be daunting at times but nothing compared with injecting a goat! We need rain here too. The incessant winds have dried things out and we’ve not had rain for a while so things are dry. We may get some relief tonight. Fresh water is real gold. Health germs all round:-)

  9. Yes, the Snow pack for Taylor res is good, BUT More needs to fall for the EXCESS to Stay in the Three Gunnison river dams [power generation is very important.]. Its just not the Gunnison Tunnel users. Snow Pack in the Other Mountains is still low as the 5 year drouth has depleted the ground water for the entire Colorado Water Basin. CA gets little of its water from the CO river but most comes from Snow Pack in the Sierra Mountains all the way from Washington to the bottom of CA. And the Drouth is extreme in CA [see all the fires]. The Eastern side of the Rockies is just as extrere for water. I hope all the snow and Ice help the people to fill all the aquifers they use.

  11. There is a good reason they shortened the days of February! lol That’s good news about your local reservoir. We will continue to pray for the other areas in need of precipitation.

  12. We had a “storm that wasn’t” overnight last night. Because we are so woefully under prepared for such conditions, the city/schools cancelled everything for today, last night.
So glad y’all will have water for the coming year. I do hope California gets rain!

  13. Bless your little patients. They’re going to feel so good when they’re back with their crittery families. Our water situation is dire indeed. Northern California is getting more rain and snow than Southern, which is good because everyone’s water comes from the north. But unless we see typhoon-type storms for a solid month we won’t have enough water. Even the metropolis areas will be rationed by at least 20%.

  14. Oh I missed this one and am just catching up now. Hurray! I am learning a lot about how important water is for you, and I had no idea how regulated your use it, or how it was tied in with the needs of people in California.

  15. We are expecting to get a big storm starting tomorrow evening into Thursday and could dump as much as 4-16 inches in 24 hours. We’ll see! You can bet I’ll make time to blog about that. I just so tired of the cold!! I filled up four five gallon buckets of water for the bathroom last night and will fill some pitchers tonight just in case the power goes out like their saying.
