The following photos are from OneFly…they are taken in the White Sands area of White Sands New Mexico north of Alamogordo and south of Carrizozo.
The mountain range in the far distance is the White Sands Missile Range. Just look at these unusual and dramatic cravings on this huge rock!
Rock Art is found all over the world. These are Petroglyphs —information carved into the rock…
Pictographs are painted on rocks. I think there is another type but I can’t think of it’s name right now.
It’s always mystery what they were saying…but I think I see a horse and either a deer or a mountain sheep. 🙂
Your friend,
Linda
Love that sign and agree as well!

I find petroglyphs so fascinating! There are a few, very few faint ones here on the ranch.
A lot of Indian burials that have been researched by archeologists. And caves that they say were inhabited at least 7000 years ago!! They found grease from raccoon, skunk and salmon! We also find a lot of arrow heads….very rich in Indian history here.
And! LOVE the sign!

I love the sign! I also enjoy the pictures of the petroglyphs, but I, too, often have trouble deciding exactly what I’m seeing. I’m just amazed at their age and hope they continue to be preserved.

I really wish we lived on a farm, but I would have to be much more organized than I am.

Cows make me happy, too. Even though I rarely see them in person. They always seem peaceful and just…. pure.

Neat post. I learned a lot from another blogger who does a lot of hiking and searching for both pictographs and petroglyphs. I think the 3rd one is called Petroforms… It’s an arrangement of stones to create some kind of monument.

I enjoyed the New Mexico pictures. I was born and raised in Las Cruces NM and they brought back good memories. My dad worked at the Missile Range for many years. Thanks!

Those are really cool. Do you know for sure that they are ancient or have they been done recently? Some of that really old cave art is eerie in its prescience.
