Yes, we still haul, cut, split, and burn firewood. We keep thinking this is the winter we stop.
But not this year. We love the extraordinary warmth that wood brings to our whole house. It feels delicious on nasty cold windy days.
Yep…still doing wood.

The warmth wood brings is something special, it soft, it smells good. We also burn firewood every winter, so this “haul, cut, split” system is very familiar.

I stopped burning wood some years ago when good hardwood became hard to come by at a reasonable price, and went to wood pellets. You still get the wood fire effect, at least with our stove, but without as much work and mess as we did with wood. We go thru about 4 tons a year, and the stove runs from November thru April. Pellet stoves take a while to get a house warm when it is cold, but are very good at keeping it warm as long as you keep them running. They do require electricity to run, but the automatic generator takes care of that when the juice goes off.

We think about a pellet stove….but finally decided on a mini-split. So far we are still trying to decide if we like it.

One of those might work if the electricity was not too expensive. Here in CA with the 2nd highest electric cost in the country I don’t think I would be able to afford it. I like the nice even heat the pellet stove gives once it gets the house up to temp. I keep it between 64 and 67 most of the time and it keeps us nice and toasty

I agree there is nothing as wonderful as a wood fire. The cats and dog agree as the stretch out in front of the stove in the evenings!
