Great! Having a farm with lots of buildings, there’s always something. The furnace is out in the bunkhouse and the electrical break keeps kicking off. And I have a leak near the art studio. Guess it keeps the boredom at bay!
I remember those times when I was helping out on the farm in Iowa, getting up at 4 in the morning and taking the first load of beans to town to get in line at the elevator for an early start. There was a cafe that opened up early for all the farmers in line and they had great food and did a land office business.
My father in law at the time had wagons to haul the beans in behind a tractor. Quite a thrill for me to trundle into town in the dark with 3 wagon loads of beans following behind. Each wagon was hooked up to hydraulics on the tractor and lifted up to dump the beans into the big grate on the floor of the elevator. I got so I could spot them right over the grate every time so only had to get off the tractor to open the dump gate and raise the wagon bed up. Fun times for sure.
One thing I learned quickly, farming is a LOT of work, there are times when there is not too much to do, and times when you have to go from “cain’t see to cain’t see” for days at a time. 10 – 12 hour days are the norm.
Yepper. Lots of those days. I am enjoying your remembering. We are starting to get wore out now, though. We keep saying we need a farmer to rent the land
Lulu: “This is great news! Our Dada is especially glad to hear about the ‘no lines’ part. He has a thing about lines. He hardly ever even goes to his favorite coffee shop anymore because the lines are so long now, and he just loves his coffee …”
