Now that I am an advanced age I (too) walk in the steps of those marvelous people who went before me: Chronic, persistent feelings of —is that defeat? Depression? an underlying sadness?
So to overcome those feelings I go outside—looking for the gift that says: You are here, alive and blessed with the joy and wonder of this world.
I always come back inside, feeling warm, happy, and blessed.

Your friend on a western Colorado farm,

At 73, I still find the same exhilaration from interacting with the natural world that I experienced as a kid growing up on a Northern Plains farm. God’s creation has always done that for me, although I was rather agnostic in my younger days. A few days ago, in the middle of Tucson I saw the most beautiful red/orange bird I’ve ever seen. It thrilled me! The things I love to do e.g. fishing, hiking, climbing (the San Juans) wildlife viewing on our foothills property and mineral/crystal collecting are all natural world experiences. To top it off I’ve been blessed with a loving wife of 49 years, 3 beautiful daughters, 3 terrific sons-in-law and 7 amazing grandkids. I have been blessed beyond my wildest imagination!

Snow makes everything new. For a brief moment, you can be freshly made again. I know your feeling, I find pain very tiring, very difficult to stay positive. But snow, or pearly dawn in the tropics are both very renewing!

I’ve decided it’s the only way to get through the feeling. Sometimes that’s hard too. But onward we go

I had to smile on the advanced age! The “kids” here are moaning and groaning about being 50 later this year…I told them piece of cake!! I know you are a few years older than me…I was 73 and Gene will be 75 in a few weeks. Hang in there!!

No it isn’t. But taking walks with fur babies makes the walks more enjoyable
