Lucky us…the Sand Hill Cranes are back and in record numbers.
They love hanging out with the calves in the one field and then sleeping with the moms-to-be at night.
We see (and hear) them coming in in droves, then some leave and some flap over to the calves.

That must make a LOT of noise. I love the cranes but they don’t stay here in the winter. And we never have many. Gus has yet to meet one close up.
Fuzzy and Boomer, we are sending magic wishes. Gus said to say HI!

They are gorgeous but I think I would be a little spooked to see them close up in those numbers.

And you said you couldn’t get good pictures of birds. Those are great. Nice of you to provide that corn stubble where they can find shelter and dinner. I love their little red hats. There are flocks of them that spend the summer here. They make an awful lot of racket when they are picking out their nesting spots. Once in a while I’m in a place where I get to see them dance. Fun.

Sand hills are awesome birds. It’s hard to believe that they are in such dense numbers but I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

LInda — how lovely and how lucky! What a wonderful wonderful post!!!! Thank you so much for sharing. I love knowing that you have them right in your “backyard.” (We were in New Mexico one fall and saw many of them like this, a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us! I am so happy for you that you see this every year. )

We saw about that many geese in a field on Saturday. It looked like the field was covered in snow; but I didn’t have the camera with me.
Great photos!

Wow. I remember, as a child, hearing stories about how the population of Sandhills might never recover – they were a doomed species… Guess they proved everyone wrong!
Got my fingers crossed for the Fuzz-Man tomorrow…

Funny that they spend the day with the calves. Wonder if the calves uncover more food for them? Sleeping with the cows is probably much warmer than one would think. Lots of body heat. 🙂
