Birds in the Yard— Wednesday, July 9, 2014

I need some help….I have this cool little bird(s) that loves to come and check out the Hummingbird feeders.  If anyone can tell me it’s name I would be delighted!

Linda Brown's at Delta CO

But first I thought I would show you a darling little Calliope Hummer.  We have the Calliope and the Black Chin again this year.   I’ve counted five pair of the Black Chin and five pair of the Calliope.

We also have four pair of the Bullock Orioles.

in-flightI was extremely excited to see one pair of Rufus Hummingbirds!

Rufus

He is sort of hard to see in the above photo, but look closely he is there.

What-kind-of-bird-1But what is this little bird?  I was thinking it was a finch of some sort, but my finch food is untouched.

What-type-of-birdOf course it is terribly shy…not letting me near it at all.

Little-Brown-BirdThis little darling comes for a drink often…or is it just curious?Little-Brown-Bird-2You can’t see the red here so now I’m wondering if this is a different bird.  Anyway, any help on identifying this bird or birds will be appreciated.

Your friend,

Linda

  1. I have no idea what bird that is…it’s very sweet. Does he look like he’s molting? Those feathers look very sparse, like they’re coming out or growing in, hard to tell…I can’t believe how many hummers you have. Amazing!

  2. I believe your little sweet-beak is a Rosie Finch. We have them here in Arizona too and they do love to steal a few sips from the hummingbird feeders! By the way, we are bringing along a hummingbird feeder to enjoy while in Paonia. Can’t wait! Teri

  3. Awww, the house finch. They were always pulling the yellow ‘flowers’ out of my hummer feeders and trying to drink. I think they are extremely interested in the hummers and want to eat what they eat, of course. Or something like that… Who knows!
I am so jealous that you have so many types of hummers! We have the Broad Tail and the troublemaker, Rufous. And all are enjoying the wildflowers 🙂

  4. He looks like a male house finch. The males are red, females just brown.
Maybe he likes the hummer food because the more pigment he ingests, the redder he becomes. And the females are more attracted to the redder males. Just read this in my bird book.

  5. Linda, this little guy looks like my house finches. With the rough looking feathers, I believe it is a fledgling. They won’t get the sleek look for several more weeks. I’ve not had one at my hummingbird feeder, but right now I don’t have any sugar water in my feeder as I have so many black flies and bees that I can’t keep it from needing to be changed twice a day!! I do have lots of flowers for the hummers, so will wait awhile to fill the feeder again. Love all your little hummers that come to visit your feeders!

    Blessings!

  6. I vote with all the house finch folks. We have a sudden plague of them, although not at the hummer feeders. In fact there are dozens of them on one of the yellow feeders you sent me. The boss enjoys them like crazy!

  7. I adore humming birds Linda. I have seen them many times in the US but sadly we don’t have them here in the UK. Wish we did.
