Although I love summer best, my heart leaps into my breast with flares of joy for spring and then once more for the bright lovely days of Autumn
Autumn to me is more than a dying time, or a song sorrow, or a lament to the Old Gods
Its a time of remembering—as the leaves fall down on the weary ground and the plants close up for another year
The sky seems to [also] brighten into strong colors even more so than the brilliant summer skies
The air is not full of the smell of green growing things and thirsty soil like it is in Spring
Nor is it full of the spices and floral scents of summer
But it is full of the smell of leaves turning yellow and falling, drifting toward the earth where we mere mortals tread.
From my world to your heart,
Linda

Silver maple makes the best aroma of autumn! They are not native here, and are actually quite rare; but I know how they smell this time of year. They are the epitome of autumn, even if they are not colorful like other maples. Apricot foliage in the Santa Clara Valley and redwood foliage in the Santa Cruz Mountains above is what I know about autumn, but I think in a perfect autumn climate like Vermont, autumn would smell like silver maple.

We have Silver Maples here. I grew up with one in our back yard shading my bedroom window. I love those trees

Really? That is cool. So many who grew up with them do not like them much. They grow fast, are structurally deficient, and they do not color wall in autumn. I like them because they are one of the few maples that does well here, and I really like how big they get.
