The Promise, Moving Steadily into Being — Monday, July 6, 2020

For some reason, I always feel like July 4th is the Middle of Summer

I don’t know why I feel that way, but I do.

The dew burns off fast this time of year

The growth of the corn is increasing hourly now

Overnight the tassels have started to shoot upward into the deep rich blue of the sky

The soughing wind will soon

(see the tiny ear starting to form 🙂 )

Cause the pollen to float down onto the silks making little kernels of corn—- growing there in the dark green shadows of the protecting leaves.

Knee-high by the 4th of July…I do believe we have made it!

Happy Summer, Everyone!

  1. Love the corn photo! That is so perfect. I agree about the 4th being the middle of summer. Even though it is subtle fall migration has already started with the return of the immature gulls to the river. Shorebirds will not be far behind.

    • WOW! Fall Migration…that’s a sad thought. In three more weeks or so the Rufus hummingbirds will arrive here from Alaska on their way south. At that point the Robins will leave.

  2. Your corn was definitely knee high by the fourth of July, I hope that indicates a good and successful harvest in the fall. In a normal year schools around here would be starting early next month — I’m not sur what will happen this year. But there is truly not much more summer left (except for the hot weather!).
