Chapter Two Boo Berry Tells a Story —- Friday, May 23, 2025

Chapter Two  Boo Berry Tells a Story

We lived in a tiny space.  Just big enough for Momma, my brother, my sister and me.  As we grew older, the space grew smaller.

One day the woman came in grabbed up my sister, my brother and myself and put us in another space next to Momma.

Momma could hear us, and we could hear Momma but we could not see her.  We could smell her.  Which helped.

Momma says it helped her, too.

Momma told us to move as close to the wall as possible, and she would sing us a song. She said she has had this happen to her many, many, many times in her life. Over time, she figured out that if we all got as close to the wall as possible, we could still have contact.

We were able to stay like this for a week or so, then the lady came in, reached down, and took away our brother.

Then the lady came back and took away our Momma. It was just my sister and I left.  We cried and cried and cried until we fell asleep.

The next day, the lady came back and picked up my sister in one hand and me in the other hand, and hauled us to a whole other spot.

On the way to that spot, we saw Momma, she was in a pen outside with a really handsome brown dog.  I yelped at Momma.  She yipped back…calling I LOVE YOU!!! Be good.  I hope we see each other again.  Then she turned and walked back into the wooden house in the back of her new pen.  The really handsome dog stayed outside and just watched all of us.

We were put in different pens.  Not far from Momma, but too far, we could just barely see her if we stood at the corner of our outside pen.

Sometimes we would yip at Momma, and she would yip back, but over time we all stopped.

Being outside was scary.

I didn’t like it. ( I do sorta now, if I’m with someone)

My sister did.  She would hang out outside our wooden hut and sniff the air, and make conversation with the birds and the bugs.

Me—I would lie in the doorway in the sun and sunbathe,  My head out, and my tail inside.  So much safer that way.

My Sister….Callie… and I were good friends.  We talked a lot about what we were seeing…how life looked now without Momma, and just chilled out.

It was when Callie and I had our 9-month birthday that the lady came back and separated us.

NO!!!! I whined NO!!!

First, Callie was put into a pen that looked like the one we saw Momma in, then down the way, around a scrub bush, I was put into the exact same kind of pen.

I crawled inside and took myself to the darkest corner I could find.

This is NOT fun!

Boo Berry Betty Tells a Story—-Friday, May 16, 2025

Mom said I needed a haircut—- soooo

Off we went and got a new summer do.

Anyway, I’ve been telling a story.  First, I tell myself in my mind.  Then I go to Mom and tell her.  THEN, together we write it.

So Here we go—My Very First Chapter

First off, I was born.  Yep, just like you, and TLC and Mom and Dad.

I really don’t remember much.  I do remember being licked all over by Momma.  Then I remember eating.  Yum.  (I still love food SO much!)

I remember I had a brother and a sister.

I also remember being picked up by a hooman.  Flipped over- pronounced girl, then put back down with my family.

I remember feeling safe with Momma and my brother and sister.  The hooman was a tad scary.  She (yes, it was a woman) would come to our spot, put down food for Momma.  Momma would get up, go eat, and get a drink of water.  She didn’t go far, we could still feel her, but only her legs.  Then she would come back and lie down again.

Sometimes she would lick us all over, and sometimes just turn her back to us and sleep.  When she did that, my brother would whine and cry until he finally fell asleep.

My eyes weren’t open for a LONG time.  But I knew Momma, my brother, and my sister.

The hooman I didn’t really know.  She would pick us up randomly and flip us this way and that, but nary a sound did she make. She didn’t even talk to Momma.  Momma said she was a tad scary.  I believed Momma.

Well, that was the beginning.  The Very beginning.

Mom said it’s good to start at the beginning, so I did.  I have to think about Chapter Two, so I’ll stop now.

Here is just before I went to get my hair cut.   Boy, it was long.

Rewriting Boo Berry —-Wednesday, April 30, 2025

Boo Berry and I always take a wee walk about— it’s good for her.  She is pretty sedentary.  If I’m working outside, she stays right by me, lying in the shade.  Or if the day is cool, in a spot of sunshine.

She doesn’t really do lots of exploring….only if I’m close, close by.

Some of this is the nature of her breed, but the other is conditioning.  She lived in a tiny kennel all of her life, from birth until I got her.

Gradually, she has developed the confidence to hang outside for a spell with

THE CAT!

But mostly she wants to be close to me.  It’s a process, but one we are making.

At least I don’t have to worry about her running off.  🙂

The Adventures of Boo Berry Betty and TLC Cai-Cai on Friday—-Work! Friday, April 25, 2025

I’ve been busy—lots o’curing here on my stretch of the farm

We have a wild rooster hanging with Boo Berry, Mom and Dad and myself

He really shouldn’t be here—-I keep telling him that, but he pretends to not understand Cat!

The other day I chased him clear to the hay swather!

Good Job, TLC! I told myself.

Then Mom (MOM!) feeds the squirrels—and the crows and the birds, and the raccoons.  I have to make mad dashes at them

One day, Mom said—“That’s enough, TLC”!

“We can let everyone live here comfortably.”

HUMPH!  So I went in and took a long, long nap.

Things will look better when I wake up.

TLC

I helped Mom!  Whatever Mom wants, I want!

A Gossamer Like Day—Sunday, April 13, 2025

The evening was just perfect last night.  A slight breeze (enough for a jacket), the sun like gossamer on the earth; tangling upon Boo Berrys’ fur,  new alfalfa leaves and in my hair.

Everything is so simple and beautiful! A magical moment that slides by too fast as good things seem to do.

Back home TLC greeted us—he (also) ready to go in from his perfect day. 🙂

Uitwaaien (v.) — To take a break to clear one’s head: To walk in the wind.

The Adventures of Boo Berry Betty and TLC Cai-Cai on Friday—-Getting Closer and Closer, Friday, April 11, 2025

Mom said we are getting closer and closer to starting the water on the farm

There are just a few things left to do—

Mark out all the fields—the alfalfa fields

The corn fields

and fix the gated pipe

Gated pipe always, always, always walks apart over the winter.

And make the ditches (and clean the ditches) Gosh, there’s lots left to do. But much closer.

Once those things are done—

Then, we go out to check/change the furrows twice daily (maybe more often).

Until it’s harvest time in the fall.

Boo Berry, Mom’s helper all the way

Good, you do that—-I’ll protect the farm!!!

The Adventures of Boo Berry Betty and TLC Cai-Cai on Friday—-Winter Returned, Sigh!, Friday, April 4, 2025

We had WIND!!! Lots of wind.  It made a dust like Dada is making dust.

Hurt my eyes, so I had to go into the house.

Then it started to rain—

It was hard working with Mom in the rain

Then the hard snow came. And Came. and Came.

And the temperatures dropped to 23* at night.

It gradually warmed up—-

But staying outside was HORRID!!!

The Adventures of Boo Berry Betty and TLC Cai-Cai on Friday—-OH! MY! GOSH!, Friday, March 21, 2025

“Boo Berry!!!

This doesn’t look good!  Let’s hurry home and see what is happening! ” Mom cried as she picked me up and sat me in my car seat.

“Oh! My! Gosh!

Get in the house TLC and Boo Berry!  Our neighbor is burning his cornfields!:  Mom ran us to the house and put us inside.

Later we learned Dad and Mom were out there making sure nothing sparked over our way.

It all turned out okay…but boy, that was scary for a spell!
