Rapidly Melting

We are rapidly melting here.  The predicted snow storm blew in and around us and left.  The days are warming up to around 37-40* then cooling down to 10-12* at night.

This is a bigger January thaw than I originally thought we were going to have.  I really can’t decide if this is good or not.  Snow means water, water is the lifeblood of life..hummm.

Of course, if the snow stays in our mountains, I could handle not having snow down here.  The frost is deep, deep in the ground so we will not be thinking of spring for at least 8-10 more weeks.  (It is January I remind myself daily)

Then this morning — during morning chores I saw it!  A sun dog—a sure sign winter is still here and colder weather is on its way!

The Cornfield and the Birds

The corn field had some new visitors today.

The Canada Geese have arrived.

Seems like there is enough room….cows, Sandhill Cranes and the Canada Geese. There were lots of them,

scattered here and there and everywhere.   The Sandhill Cranes were still there also.  It looked like to me everyone has decided to get along and share the cornfield.

For the geese it is probably safer that way…it’s still hunting season here.

I Finally Did It!!!

I got a several photos of the cranes!  They are so very hard to sneak up on…I had to walk very, very carefully….taking only a few steps at a time and then waiting and waiting and waiting…no dogs, cats, children or husband along.  Just me and my camera.

It is a fact they are Sandhill Cranes…very lovely birds.

In the hundreds that are wintering here, I see no Canada Geese with them.  Usually we have hundreds of geese and no Sandhill Cranes.

They enjoy the corn and they like to be with the cows.  The corn they seem to like the best is the hard-dent corn (corn you feed to animals and make corn bread from), the sweet corn fields they seem to shun.

The only other fields they like are the winter wheat fields, everything else is scorned.

Well, anyway, I made it!  Now we all know…

Sandhill Cranes!

It’s sort of melting here. I can’t decide if that is good or bad.  I guess it is what it is.  I am thankful for the warmer days, it’s been really rather (too) cold.  A little warm up is always nice.  It breaks up the days.  I’m sure we will be seeing bitter cold again soon, it is just January.

Happy 2012…we have arrived!

Sunday Stills—2012

The challenge for Sunday Stills is to post your favorite photo from 2011 and your photographic hopes for 2012.

I actually liked this one that I took this morning…I love the colors and the crisp feeling it provokes.

I hope to be able to continue to ‘see’ what I’m photographing—looking for lines, lights, and colors. And apply it to people.

I’m still learning how to photograph people…it’s a skill I would love to have.

Have a wonderful 2012…It doesn’t seem possible we are here.  When I was in the first grade this year seemed ages and ages away.

Birds

I finally got close enough to get a ————–far——————-shot of those cranes.  I’m still not sure what type of crane they are…they do not look like they have a red on their heads, but maybe they do.

The ravens and crows are flocking in the fields also.  I even saw one of them on a light pole at Wally World

The Canada Geese have left the fields for the cranes, but are very happy in the lakes and ponds around the area

If I can ever get closer to the cranes I hope to get a better photo…I would love to know what kind they are.

Computer Repair

I just had a computer crash…what a mess!  When you realize what has happened you get a huge sinking feeling in your stomach, then you want to cry.

I did cry.

But I’m back with it fixed and up-graded and all sorts of good stuff.  My computer guy moved me over to Google Chrome where I am having a learning curve, but I think I’m going to make it.

Having my computer back is just wonderful!  One good thing I had done earlier is get Carbonite.  What a life saver!  I highly recommend it!  HIGHLY!

I’m off for a walk…it’s really beautiful outside and I need to wind down and thank God, the Universe and any and all Powers that be for the fixing and return on my computer in a very short time.  (I was afraid I was going to have to go without until after the first of the year…HORRORS).

A Partridge in a Pear Tree or in Our Case— Doves in an Apricot Tree

Well, not really.  These ring-necked doves did not migrate this year, but decided to stay.

Most of them flew away as I got near, but these three stayed…keeping a close eye on the dogs.

Another snow storm is coming in, clouds are building as I write this. We are supposed to get snow Tuesday night of Wednesday morning.  Looks like we will have a winter Christmas.

We were going to anyway, but the new snow will freshen up the trompled and walked in snow so we will look nice and clean for the big day.

Terry has gone to a farm sale, that also ’tis the season.  I plan on getting all of my holiday baking done and finish up a few things still left to do.

Hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful time of the year.

Sunday Stills

What represents Christmas to you is this weeks Sunday Stills.

For me it is the tree, always the tree.  I don’t care what kind of tree, real, artifical, snow coverd…(well, maybe not those wild pink and red and blue trees)…some with lots of lights, some with not so many lights, some outside, some inside…it doesn’t matter.  I love Christmas trees.

I also like lights on all sorts of trees and bushes outside.

There isn’t a Sunday Still challenge next week, because it is Christmas.  But there will be one for New Year’s Day.

Sunday Stills is a really good way to develop your photographic skills and to meet other people interested in photography.  Maybe for 2012 you would like to join us.  If you do, just leave a message in the Sunday Stills comment area that you will be up and when, then post your photo for the blog challenge, link the two blogs together, and visit those who also participate.

Have Fun!

Merry Christmas, one and all!
