About Dayphoto

My name is Linda Brown. I live on a farm on the western slope of Colorado, in the high mountain desert. I’ve lived here all my life, hailing back four generations on my father’s side. Today I blog about our farm, the everyday activities that keep the farm going. I also write about my thoughts and dreams and goals. On Friday’s I always write about TLC Cai-Cai. Our sweet kitty who helps keep the farm safe. And Boo Berry Betty, a breeder dog learning to be a Farm Dog! The lovely thing about blogging it opens the world up for all of us to reach out and meet people from many different cultures and different ways of life. You can find me every day (but Saturday) at https://coloradofarmlife.wordpress.com/ Your Friend on a Western Colorado Farm, Linda Brown

All the windows are washed, everything is greased and cleaned and the oil changed…

Tomorrow we begin

The Iron Stone Canal

Our irrigation water comes from the Iron Stone Canal.  If you remember, the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users turned off all the irrigation water on the 14th of October.

One week and several days later this is what the canal looks like

It takes several days for the water to finally shrink until there is nothing left…always amazing how long and how far the water travels until it reaches the Gunnison and the Colorado Rivers.

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — Boomer’s Birthday

Today is MY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Well, really MY ADOPTION DAY!!!  ‘cause Mom says we don’t know when my birthday really is.

This is the day I PICKED MY PEOPLE!!!

Anyway, Mom asked me what I would like to do for my BIRTHDAY!!! Oh, YES ADOPTION DAY and I said…

“GO SWIMMING!”  Fuzzy interrupted with a wide grin and a very wiggly tail.

“NO!!!” I yelled. “I DO NOT LIKE WATER!” I barked right back at him.

Then I smiled and asked Mom if I could have a walking party to the upper end!

She said yes…

So Rock and Balou and Houston came over (Houston and I are hounds…she is a Mountain Cur and I’m a Beagle, how cool is THAT!)

And Hank walked over with our littlest tyke of a grandchild and we all sniffed and walked our way to the upper end…

Then across the upper end…

Then over to the back 40

Then down the cement ditch

Then over to the equipment storage area

Then back across this year’s harvested pinto bean field

Back Home!

After that everyone got PIG EARS!!!

YIPPEEE!

Mom hung onto them until everyone left, then Fuzzy got one and I got one.

I hid mine,

but Fuzzy took his

to the Dog house.

I HAD A GREAT DAY!

I knew I had picked the right family the first time I set foot on this place.

Here’s Mom’s 4 O’clock photo!

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to Me…whistle, hummm sing

Windy Tuesday Post on Wednesday

We have a leaf removing wind come in this morning right around 5:30

It has blown all day…not hard, but hard enough that we went from lovely leaves on the tree to lovely leaves on the lawn

and every place else

I have winterized the garden hoses and the pump

We are all buttoned up, where it comes to the water.

Here is my 4 O’clock photo — The Day length is now 10 hours and 54 minutes.  Sunrise starts at 7:30ish and sets around 6:51 or so in the evening.

A Short Note on Our Trip

One of the things Terry enjoyed on the trip was going through Idaho…and the reason why…

They were doing potatoes

Who could ask for more?!

A Very Busy Week

We finished putting the roof on the house…it has taken us three years.

That is because we do it ourselves with the help of our son-in-law, Kelly.

Although, we bought everything at once so we would match (a very good idea) we took our time to do the job.

The reason why—

  • we had to do it between the pinto bean harvest and the corn harvest
  • we are old and need help
  • Kelly is an Assistant Principal at one of our local high schools and only has one fall break
  • It isn’t possible to do it in winter (in our opinion)
  • It isn’t possible to do it in the spring or the summer either, because of the crops
  • WHAT!?!?!  Hire it done?!?!?!  (Terry’s words)
  • A week is long-enough to work on an heavy, exhausting project
  • I’m sure there are other reasons but these were enough for us

This the last year…three years and we are done!

First we had to tear off the old roof and shingles and fix any broken boards that may be up there.

Then came the new roof, the felt paper and the metal.

Yippee!

Linda

P.S.  I should have painted, but I didn’t think about it until we were done and I could see how badly painting was needed.

I guess I will have to do it next summer….on a metal roof.  Sigh!

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — Boomer Checks In

We had several days of rain awhile back, but so far we have been having clear, warm days, the kind that makes Fall just perfect.

I’ve been busy soaking up the sun and the heat…I rather like to sunbathe all the time, well, except in the Summer…that more like baking and I don’t like to bake.

Fuzzy and I checked out the corn for Dad…he was getting corn samples in all the fields to see if it is time to start combining….we ran clear to the deer wallow, scared up the buck.  Dad yelled at us because NOW if the deer run through the corn it will be knocked down.

Oh, yes…the corn is dry…after Dad and Kelly get the roof on the house Dad will start combining…next week —-Fuzzy and I think.

We will see.

The people who share the west fence with us let their renter put in heifers yesterday…there still isn’t a fence there, so Dad had to talk to renter about the fence line…

The renter is going to put up an electric fence.

And electric fence is made of small steel posts and a thin strand of wire.

It’s called an electric fence because it’s hooked up to a battery that is solar powered.  I’m not sure how it works but this I know for sure….if you keep your tail up real high and you are wagging it because you are happy and you go under the electric fence….

YEWOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuzzy and I decided to not hang around, there were better things to find out than listening to fence talk.

Like always there is so much stuff to learn out there.

Dad sold the jeep so we got to bark Matt all the way down the lane and then bark him over to the jeep, then bark him back down the lane.

That was FUN!

We barked in the postman, (he always gives us dog cookies) the UPS Guy…he is always grouchy he says he doesn’t like dogs, Matt for the jeep and Kelly (several times).

We have been really busy with helping people in and out of our farm.

Blade came over and helped with the roofing job, (he really hung out with Hank and me.)

Fuzzy doesn’t much hang out with the kids; he hangs with Mom ALL THE TIME!

So as you see it’s been a really nice week!

Now the sun is just right; I feel a nap coming on.

Wildlife

As we entered the park we were told “WATCH OUT FOR THE BEARS”!! and then given all sorts of brochures telling us to watch out for the wildlife, do NOT get close to the animals…in the Visitor Center were video’s running of people getting hurt by the wildlife.

So we were pretty open to ‘seeing’ wildlife.

It must have been the wrong time of the year

We saw very little…..

But what we saw were traffic stoppers!  If we came upon cars stopped every which way (including tour bus—of which there were MANY), even in the middle of the road we knew some type of animal was up ahead.

We saw…………….

A cool family of Buffalo

An elk

A very thin deer (in Green River)

Another elk (the following two photos and the deer above were taken by Wayne Maxwell)

Taken in the evening on the second day

Lots of crows

A cool little butterfly

Several bear at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone, Montana

Wolves

Then I saw the Three Bears

And I KNOW this is stupid, but I got to take a photo of a magpie!

Those birds are extremely hard to photograph.  I happen to think they are beautiful birds.

We don’t have them in our area anymore…the ravens and the crows have pushed them out.  They maybe living in other parts of Delta and Montrose County, but I, personally, haven’t seen any for a very long time.

Then, although we know we were NOT suppose to stand or get close to the wildlife…Terry just HAD to go stand by a Moose!  These animals are huge!

Tee-hee-hee!  HAHAHA!  Laugh, snicker, chuckle!

FINALLY—YELLOWSTONE

We made it into Yellowstone Park the next day…excitement abounded in the car…WE WERE GOING TO SEE OLD FAITHFUL!!!

Which we did three different times…the first time was planned.

We stayed in West Yellowstone that evening, then went back into the park.  We spent two days touring.

The amazing beauty and the exciting thought that we were walking on top of a giant super-volcano kept us all in awe

People were everywhere

I could NOT imagine how crowded it must be in ‘high’ season—summer time— as we were never without crowds ourselves.

Everything about Yellowstone is dramatic

You can walk or drive your car to just about any outstanding place possible

Those are stairs to an over-look

But I must confess, the one thing that amazed me was man-made…

 The Old Faithful Inn

If memory serves me right it was finished building and opened in 1904.  The building is MASSIVE and all out of logs and stone.

The second I saw it I wanted to spend at least one night there.  We checked to see if there were any openings…If you want to spend a night or so at the Inn you MUST make reservations a YEAR in advance!  And the rooms are down right pricey.  But for once in a life-time….

$400 was way too much for us and there wasn’t one anyway.

Ah, well…one can dream.

Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons

In Jackson, Wyoming….Jackson Hole refers to the valley.  The Mountain Men of yore called valley’s hole, thus Jackson Hole.  We found

Antler arches…amazing pile of antlers…on each corner of the city park square

The we saw the Grand Tetons in the Teton National Park.  I remember seeing this when I was fourteen years old and fell into awe with them at the time.  My awe has not changed…they are still wonderful!

We rode the tram to the diamond and double black diamond ski slope at the peak of of the Tetons…

The wind at the top was S.T.R.O.N.G!

ButBut the view….

WOW!

I could never ski down this, but I’m sure there are those out there that would delight in tackling this mountain

The moon that evening was perfect….

The next day we made it to Yellowstone.

Linda

P.S.  Terry lost the first two games…then after that they tied!  🙂
