In-Between Irrigations

Last week we had rain…lovely, lush, wet, rain. Four days of rain. It soaked in 1/2 inch giving much needed life to everything.

Irrigation doesn’t stop just because of rain, mainly because the rain doesn’t really soak in far enough to do tons of good.

But in-between irrigating we had lots of things to do-

Terry was given a hot shave gift certificate for his birthday…off we went to Grand Junction for this first time experience
Our daughter and son-in-law lost Riley—that was very hard
I was a parent volunteer for our oldest granddaughter’s class field trip–which was a lot of fun. We rode on a bus and played and EVERYTHING
This same grandchild had a piano recital
We went to Gunnison and on up to Taylor Dam to see what the irrigation water is looking like–not good. Not good at all!

When I was chopping weeds along the edge of the fields one evening the sky turned amazingly orange as the storm clouds blew away. The color filled the whole sky and even surrounded Terry on the ditch bank and probably me at the end of the field.

I am always so appreciative of this great big beautiful world we live in, I’m sure you are too.

The cold front is still here, but gradually moving on. By this coming weekend we should have somewhat warmer weather.

Yesterday morning we were 2 above Zero, this morning we were 5 above Zero…just a little bit warmer, but I’ll take it.

The day will warm up better than yesterday, we should see warmth around 47* this afternoon. Gradually, gradually, we are heading back toward spring.

Just as Terry and I were going to head off to upper end our son-in-law showed up with half-a-load of firewood for us. What a cool gift!

The hope is this will last until May…which by that time (WE THINK) it will be warm enough spring is really here!

I can remember my Mother saying that anytime we have an early Easter (an Easter in March) the weather is always bad. That you can’t have winter end until Easter comes. Even if she isn’t right, so far this year is seems to be so.

Not lots happening here. It’s rained off and on for two days…I should be able to go out and start to find green shoots of something coming up. The rain has pretty much melted off all the old snow, which is good. Now we have mud…one step closer to farm and yard work!

Once we get dry enough down here we will get out on the ground and start.

Yippee!

The talk is all about water, (I’m sure you are not surprised) but it is snowing in the mountains and now they (the Ditch Company people) are thinking…just thinking at this point…that WHEN they turn on the water they will start at 60% instead of 50%.

I always smile when I hear the men fretting and worrying, because I have a HUGE Secret…MAGIC THOUGHTS!

All of you in blog land are sending MAGIC THOUGHTS to our reservoirs in Gunnison County —Taylor Park Reservoir and Blue Mesa Reservoir.

Since all of you started with the MAGIC THOUGHTS we have gone from 50% to POSSIBLY 60% !!!

How very exciting. And the weather forecast shows more rain for us on Friday, which should mean SNOW IN THE HIGH COUNTRY!!!

We are narrowing down February…the month is close to an end. Which suits me just fine…February is my hardest month to get through, even though I try really hard to liven up the month with bright colors to make up for the forever cold days.

This storm is going to be here today (30% chance of snow) and tomorrow (40% chance of snow) then leaving us with just 10% chance of snow. Usually that 10% is in the mountains…which is always good.

(The moon has a thin film of clouds over it, I was hoping the clouds would show up, but they just made the moon fuzzy.)

If every thing holds together the week end look like it will be warm and sunny! YIPPEE!

Sunday we were a bit tired, actually exhausted! Terry took off the day (accept for irrigating) and I took off time to work in my yard (I planted the garden and set out plants for half of the yard — all together the whole thing comes to 1.5 acres and can get too much if I don’t stay with it, real fast.) I also got my dusting and vacuuming done. Terry did all the irrigating except I helped him just before nightfall.

Saturday Terry and I went into town and helped our son work on his ‘new to him’ house. He had an old fireplace he wanted the bricks removed from and to set up his air conditioner, that took the morning. After changing the water we went back in and helped him hang his drapes and curtains.

He is really getting this old place, built in 1918, up to speed. I find it fun to see what changes he has accomplished from one visit to the next. There are a couple of more projects we will help with, but after that he won’t need the extra hands.

While we were there a little boy from two blocks came over looking for the little boy that lives next door. We were shocked to see he had a bird riding on his shoulder.

The bird does not fly away. The little boy said that the bird had been hurt about two years ago, by flying into a ceiling fan. After the bird recovered he was never able to fly again. So now the bird goes everywhere with the little boy. He said he would take him to school but the teachers won’t let him.
