Working on the Burn Area

Saturday, Evan came out to help Terry and I clean up

some of the charred and burned trees, shrubs and fences around and on the alfalfa hill, it took us all day, but it sure was worth it.

We have three more knolls to go and 6 little hollows, plus the two miles of property fence line on the West side of the place.

Of course we still haven’t heard any more from the insurance guy and the Ditch Company must be way too busy to come through on the North and East side of the place.

We are lucky that we don’t have any cows this year as this fence issue would be a huge problem.  We can work on everything as we have time, which really does help.

If any of the grandchildren showed up, I put them to work 🙂  Two of them came for about an hour at a time.  First one showed up then the other.  Having them help pick up wire and broken stubs and charred fence posts with me was rather nice.

They would stay for a time, but this kind of work is hot, dirty and tiring

I think it does their little souls good….helping out the old folks!  🙂

The sunset last night was outstanding, a cloud cover was drifting in for today so as the sun sank everything turned rose and pink!

The Morning After

The huge cold front is pushing itself through our area, leaving behind a beautiful sunset last night complete with sun brightened  jet streams.

This morning as the sun came up I saw a sun dog along with the sunrise.

Our sky’s are just wonderful!  All we need to do is look up!

Have a really nice Tuesday, everyone!

Busy, Busy, Busy

Our alfalfa has been cut for the second time of the year, once more I’m reminded that summer is half over.  Third cutting of hay will occur at the same time as the pinto bean harvest.

We had a huge wind storm come up day before last, knocking down huge tree limbs and in general making a big mess.  But after it all  I saw….

A beautiful rainbow!  Makes picking up branches so worthwhile.

The sunset was pretty amazing also.

My yard is looking good, however very weedy.  Between work and farming and life getting to the weeds is sometimes difficult.

Still all in all good things are always there if you open your eyes to them.  My daughter’s father-in-law wanted some limbs from the old lilac tree/bush.  We were glad to give him some.

Then the other day he brought over to us this

Lovely hand-made pen and pencil set from the lilac bush!  A pretty cool gift, I must say.

This One’s for You

This-One's-For-You

There is something just absolutely amazing about the sky lately. And I have seen on other people’s blogs you are seeing it too.  Maybe it is because we are leaving summer and moving into fall, or maybe it is something else.  But the sky is really a wonder to behold.

The Days are Growing Longer

purple-winter-sky

I am sooo happy!  The days are growing longer and longer so there is more daylight to do chores in.  Here is a neat site

http://www.sunrisesunset.com/custom_srss_calendar.asp

to let you see the actual time of daylight where you live.

It comes in calendar format so you can print it out and hang it up to check daily.  (That is what I do…it has the best spot on the refrigerator.)

For instance today is Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Twi: 7:00am
Sunrise: 7:29am
Sunset: 5:12pm
Twi: 5:41pm
Moonrise: 8:40pm
Moonset: 9:13am

YEAH!

Sunset and the End of the Day

The sun sets around 8:30 in May, so the days are long.  Work isn’t just 8-5, but starts around 5:30 in the morning and ends after the sun goes down.

Working in the Fields at Sunset

sunset-in-march-2008.jpg

For over 30 plus years all of Terry’s farming occurred AFTER his day job, or before he was required to report to his day job.  The evening this photo was shot, Wednesday, March 12, 2008, will be one of his last times he will ever have to do farmwork before or after his day job.  Terry will be retiring from Delta-Montrose Electric Association after 37 years on March 20, 2008.  (Thirty-four of those years were spent as a line-foreman! )  Way to go, Hubby-boo!
