Winter can be sooooooooooooo long.
The dreary days have me dreaming of last summer
But—last summer is not the future
So I try to spend the long days
Capturing charming photos
Of winter’s birds.
They do lighten the days as they wing across the skies
Or glide carefully onto one of the large piles of firewood.
Shhh—carefully watching as
As lift-off occurs.
Birds, enchanting and spell-binding.

While out repairing the electric fence the cows so delightedly tore down—I couldn’t help but enjoy the cold touch of the almost winter breeze as it cooled our late fall land even further.
It was on the last string of wire, when Shannon stopped and asked her Dad to look at into the tree. Hearing them talk I ha to leave my fencing duties to see what they found.
Another wonder of our magnificent earth…a huge wasp nest!

Winter is fasting coming upon us!
The Sandhill Cranes have returned!
I couldn’t get all of the Sandhill Cranes in the photo; they were scattered here there and everywhere in the disked corn field. But they are back. And they beat the Canada Geese.
I’m sure it won’t be long now before our skies have the sounds of geese talking to each other as they wing their way from the North.
It’s nice we have winter birds. They help brighten the long winter days.
It’s storming here right now. The wind is blowing, tossing the corn here and there, rain is splattering on the windows. I started a fire in the woodstove. The house was decidedly cold.
Later on today I will need to gather my fire making things, kenneling, starter sticks, smaller logs and then the large logs that keep the flame going. I will have to go down to the other house and do the same thing there. We are making headway at that house, but there is at least another week to go.
Also Terry found out that the furnace system needs to completely be replace. “(If it isn’t one thing,” my Momma used to say,”it’s another!’) That means a possiblya new furnace and new duct work. SIGH!
My theory is: to do one job it always takes at least five other jobs so you can get the original job completed.
Gradually we will make it…one step at a time.

The winter birds have arrived….we are seeing daily crows and ravens (Although, those birds live here year-round they don’t stay close to the farms) and the ever present flocks of sparrows and starlings. We have others but these are the majority of the birds. The owls are back in the tops of our trees sending their soft hoo-hoos into the night.
The air is full of the sound of Sandhill Cranes…we have lots and lots of them —-I mean lots!
They are looking for certain fields, landing in one and then leaving and then landing in another
Where the Canada Geese used to be we now have the cranes.
I’m not complaining…I enjoy both of the bird types.
As winter progresses we will start to see the birds species mixing, but for now…for the beginning of things they won’t share. Most of the Canada Geese are hanging out at the water places, the rivers and Confluence Lake and small ponds.
I hope to get closer to these really shy birds to try and get a really nice shots of the birds.
I also hope they come closer to the house so I can watch them right out the window, that would be fun!
Anyway, we are taking the day off today…no real work..tomorrow we start back up again.
