Counting Gifts Gained —- Tuesday, March 19, 2019

Terry and I were extremely surprised and excited and blessed to have our oldest grandchildren call and say they were coming to spend this past weekend with us.

Having teenagers call and ask to be with you, as elders, is so amazing and moving.

You see, as a person ages you stop being ‘seen’.  It really is that simple.  Women are much more than men.  It’s not that we vanish from sight, but the showy glitter of youth and the marvelous golden shine of adults cause ‘elders’ to recede into shadows.

I know we are still loved, but there is a sorta struggle to relate—after all grandparents were never really young, never really ‘did’ stuff like they or their parents do and —sometimes don’t even understand all the tech gadgets all the kids know and use, thereby making elders — well, boring.

But our life here on the farm gives us an unusual identity

And old friends from Delta an added bonus.

So, for a marvelous three days, we had our oldest grandchildren with us—we played dominos, Skip-Bo,

went swimming at Ouray, the kids got to see old friends, and I cooked all their favorite meals.

Today we are back to our regular routines, tired but ever so pleased.

In That Glow —- Monday, March 18, 2019

Of the lengthening days and the shortening of the nights

That wonderous moon grows ever fuller; shining brightly from ascent to descent.

Brightening our dimming dusk making it glow!

As the Light Dances in the Evening Skies—-Sunday, March 17, 2019

The long v’s of big birds fly over our farm in the evening,

looking ever so carefully for a place to land, eat, and rest before taking off again for that very long flight to their summer homes mesmerizes me.

I love to stand outside and listen to their calls curling around me in the air

The glimmer of pink on the clouds,  the shadows of the birds flying over;

I feel as if there is deep magic on this earth…that God is very generous with us!

From my world to your heart,

Linda

Through the Air Lightly —- Thursday, March 14, 2019

The Sandhill cranes are still filling our fields at night, then taking to the skies early morning as they move ever northward.

One day (before this big storm arrived) I caught a wee snow cloud putting down snow on the Grand Mesa…it was a lovely sight to see.

Also, I had a photo of a Ringed-Neck Dove I took as it sat on the fence next to our lane…

It flew away when it saw me.

The last three photos were taken just a day or two before our big wet storm.  But they were so lovely I wanted to share them with you!

My Mother Always Said—Wednesday, March 13, 2019

Our sun is covered with thick clouds of heavy moisture….it has been for three days

Today we have wind…lots and lots of wind, plus rain and very cold temperatures.

The birds are flying low the sky; the air full of their calls.

Wind is good and bad…for it is the wind that will move this stuff out of here; chilling us to the bone.

And possibly drying up all the rain.  🙂

My mother always said: “When Easter is late so is Spring”.

I think she is right! 🙂

Behind—Very Behind—Tuesday, March 12, 2019

ALL Photos were taken a few days ago when we had a break in the weather!

We are having rain again today; the air is sharp and cold, there is a feeling of snow just there on the surface of the rain, but not really.

The blessing in everything there is no wind.  Although, the wind would take the rain away…just say’n.  (I guess I’m being fussy)

Although the moisture was very needed, the weather gods need to slow things down a bit and bring on some warmth and sunshine.

Farming is already three weeks behind and everyone is starting to get extremely worried. Our clay ground needs to have time to be worked up, left to mellow out, before it can be planted.

So here we are waiting…and the rains continue.  Maybe soon we will see sunshine and warmth.

Maybe.

The Mist and Rain has Closed Us In —– Monday, March 11, 2019

Although the mist makes the air seem soft

And the light on the rain clouds make the dawn special

Last evening, as the sun set through the rain clouds I had to marvel….there it was — a perfect rainstorm occurring on the Uncompahgre Plateau, shimmering and glistening for all to see!

I Saw a Western Meadow Lark —- Sunday, March 10, 2019

I saw a Western Meadow Lark,Western Meadowlark Breeding adult a bird I just love to see and hear. That is a photo off the All About Birds web site, but I wanted you to see what one looks like! 🙂

I thought I heard one the other day, but today I actually saw one

Even though the storm clouds are playing with us

The spring birds are coming back!

Spring is coming…for certain and for sure!

Heading Home — Thursday, March 7, 2019

Terry, Boomer and I took a ride up to the Upper End and the Back Forty, checking the grasses, mud, and snowmelt

We were also pleasantly Surprised to still see the Sandhill Cranes filling the land and the skies of up there.

We are seeing less and less of the big birds…all the Canada Geese, who wintered on the farm are gone…heading home for the summer

And the Sand Hill Cranes are becoming less and less.

Eckert, where my brother and I grew up, holds annual Sandhill Crane Days starting about March 10 until April 20.   Sandhill cranes are relatively new to our area, we didn’t have them when my brother and I where children and young adults.

I heard from a long-time blog reader, Emily, that the Sandhill Cranes have arrived at her ranch even though they still have two feet of snow.

So every day now the big birds are going home. And the Spring and Summer birds are coming back…I thought I heard a Western Meadowlark when we were up there in the pasture lands…I sure hope I did.

Look What We Found—-Wednesday, March 6, 2019

In working on one of the old buildings here on the farm,

We found an old steam iron.  It must have been put out there to prop up a door or even to store, but over time it fell into the dirt and was buried.

How cool this is.  And what an amazing thing to iron with!
