And it Rained and Rained and Rained—Sunday, September 25, 2022

A regular feast of moisture

The only sound for a long long time is the whisper plop

Of raindrops

We were so desperate here for rain—this has been a true blessing.

Bliss!

The Adventures of TLC Cai-Cai and Boo Berry —SCATTER— Chapter 9, Friday, September 23, 2022

“COMPANY! I yelled, TLC COMPANY!”

“Who?” TLC Cai- Cai asked as he lazily walked toward me.

“Loki,

Black Beauty,

and Kia!”

“Oh, I like Black Beauty”

TLC Cai Cai exclaimed!

“I don’t think I like ANYONE!

If Mom stays,

I will be okay— I can handle the company.

OTHERWISE, I AM GOING TO

SCATTER!”

Oddly Silent —- Tuesday, September 20, 2022

This is the time of year when the earth is warmer than the air

When a lovely foggy mist rises up from the land

Surrounding us in silent glory

The whole earth is blessed in this single moment of silence.

The New Alfalfa Field— Monday, September 19, 2022

This is the new alfalfa field.  The baby plants are looking GOOD!  This field will NOT be harvested this year.  The protein in brand-new plants is very high and can damage and even kill animals.  Once a killing freeze comes along then all alfalfa is safe for animals to eat.

Next year.  One field is plowed under and a new one is seeded to produce the following year.

One field lasts about three, maybe five years depending on the type of seed and weather and water and weeds.

We Do Not use Round-Up ready alfalfa so our crop is managed the old-fashioned way.

Rotation is the key to good farming and strong crops.  Terry rotates all his crops, it’s healthy for the soil and for the crop itself.

The Adventures of TLC Cai-Cai and Boo Berry —SCATTER— Chapter Eight, Friday, September 16, 2022

“Gosh, Boo Berry Betty.  Mom and Dad have been B.U.S.Y!”

“I see that.  They are going here and there and everywhere on the farm, in the yard, just everywhere.”

“Yes, and you have to FAST if you want to get inside and eat something.”

“Or just get inside, it’s HOT out here.”

“Aren’t you glad we are NOT people?  Their work seems so HARD, Boo Berry Betty, we just get to do fun things all the time.”

“Yeh, but—we can’t go in when we want to.”

Why do you worry, you only come outside when you are with Mom?”

“Well, outside is so BIG!  I just like inside better.” Boo Berry Betty replied.

“What are Mom and Dad doing now, TLC Cai-Cai?”

“Gosh, Boo Berry Betty, they SCATTERED!”

I Can Feel a Hint of Fall in the Air — Thursday, September 15, 2022

I can feel a hint of Fall in the air, (Just a hint—but I’ll take it)

Just a hint,

But that sparks a wee surge of hope

I truly love summer, But the HEAT this year has been horrible

Savage, actually.

Now I am hoping for long days of bright Autumn before winter brings dark days without sun, full of wind, and cold.

Blue Mesa Reservoir —- Wednesday, September 14, 2022

Blue Mesa Reservoir is the primary Reservoir from which OUR irrigation water flows THROUGH.

Our irrigation water comes from Taylor Park Reservoir, owned and operated by the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users.   The Water from Taylor Park flows into the Gunnison River through Blue Mesa Reservoir then out to all of us.

We took a short trip (it’s about an hour or so to the reservoir) to see how low it is.

It’s low.

You can see by the water line.

Gosh, I sure hope we have lots and lots and lots of snow this winter.

For our water in the Gunnison and the Uncompaghre flow into the Colorado River and all of you know how bad THAT is.

A Day in the Life of an Ordinary Farmer —- Monday, September 12, 2022

We spent all day Thursday hauling dirt from the settling pond a mile from our farm.

Load the trailer, dump the trailer repeat.

We will use this dirt to fill in low spots on the fields, to fix a road that washed out, and to pack areas which  the wind has whipped bare (like over culverts)

Last load—8-5 we are tired and ready to stop.

Done for another year.
