A Request for Help, Please—August 21, 2017

We have a varied and wide variety of Hummingbirds in Colorado…I have personally identified at least three here on the farm—-

According to hummingbirds.net this is the types of hummingbirds identified to Colorado— Colorado
Broad-tailedRufousBlack-chinnedCalliopeBlue-throatedMagnificentAnna’sRuby-throatedBroad-billedWhite-eared, Green Violet-ear.

I think this is the Black-Chin hummingbird

This is a Rufus…they are the bullies of the whole bunch

Although I adore their coloring!

I think I’ve seen a Calliope and a Broad Tail

But I don’t know what this little one is

It’s little beak is even blue like it’s adorable feathers.

If anyone of you happens to know would you leave a the answer in the comment section?

Thank you very much!

Linda

A Malevolent Wind Gave Us Rain—Monday, July 31, 2017

Around four o’clock yesterday afternoon a wind-fretted bundle of clouds blew in churning the air into a seething angry mess!

The little hummingbirds started feeding in a desperate and determined manner.

Suddenly the wind shifted moved west, then north, and finally east, where it slammed into our area with a vengeance untold

Dropping rain in torrent, flattening anything which stood in it’s path.

Then in swirl of angst the wind-fretted rain moved on…drenching everything in it’s path.

By evening the sun started disappearing;  sending slivers of gold and silver among the slate colored clouds.

This morning is clear and bright, although very muddy!   The smells of warming corn stalks and the heady scent of Four O’clocks fill the air.  Along with the chirps and clicks and the buzz of many little wings as the hummers fill their tummies.

Hovering in the Air—-Monday, June 12, 2017

One of life’s little joys (for me, anyway) are the tiny little Hummingbirds, who hover in the air around the feeders.  They come mostly in the early morning and the late evening, but I have them off and on throughout the day.

Looking through Pinterest the other day, and being a tad bored, I decided to give myself a go at a Hummingbird Swing….

Well, that turned out a little rough, but oh, well there always has to be a first one.

Ahhh, much better!

So I took them outside and attached them to the feeder poles

Which the wind promptly tried to rip off.

Finally I got it figured out so they will stay there.  Then last evening at last light, I saw a little hummer resting on one of the swings.

Of course I didn’t have the camera.

Of well!

Maybe (as time goes on) I will get a photo of a Hummingbird sitting on a swing!

The Return of Winter—-Thursday, May 18, 2017

We went from summer-like weather

To radically dropping temperatures and snow!

All within one day!  Yesterday the little hummingbirds sucked the feeders dry and I refilled them twice in one day.  Look at that poor wet little thing.

Wet and cold.

Today is a continuation of yesterday, then by tomorrow this winter storm will gradually move out to replaced with much warmer weather by Sunday.

Sure is a bad deal.

Our hope is the crops make it through…the hay was just starting to bloom, the corn up, my garden and flowers all planted….

Only time will tell.

Women’s Work is Never Done—-Thursday, May 11, 2017

So why keep on sweeping the floor, washing the windows, vacuuming the rugs?

When there are so many more things to accomplish…’stuff’ to add to the tiny little cubbyholes of my mind.

Things that cannot be committed to paper

Those tiny spots, of which, if we will just stop and ‘see, will creep over us; tiptoe into our memory banks,

Fill up our wonder…then when old age creeps in, and the body can no longer preform…then those small precious celebrations will spill out in brightly colored heaps, reminding us of yesteryear.

Once More the Hummers—Thursday, August 25, 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YohBENfOgic

So far we are having lots and lots of Hummers.  I’m now having to make 1 1/2 gallons of sugar water daily.

I’m NOT complaining.  I just love these little things.

I didn’t do a very good job, but hope you can get a feel for these cute tiny birds.  Although, I have noticed, in just a short time, the Rufus have left…I suppose it won’t be long now for these little ones to head further on down toward the south.

Makes me a little sad, but that’s the way of the summer birds.

I am so poor at taking photos of the hummingbirds, so I thought I would take a video!

They are a huge delight!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—-Stuff

Shooting-Feelers1

My days are pretty much just rolling along.  We are starting to see little vines and flower buds on the pinto beans.  I could care less, but Mom and Dad think it’s a HUGE deal.  I just wag my tail and agree with them.

Baby-CornThe baby corn is popping up on the corn stalks.  If I move through the corn rows I come out will corn pollen on me.  Dad says this is a scary time for corn, the deer like to eat the silk.  If they eat the silk the corn won’t make.  Dad always gets really worried about this time of year.  Mom says it’s our 10% tithe.

Apricot-Theif

The fox and the raccoon are helping Mom clean up all the apricots.  Fox can climb trees, did you know that?  So can raccoons.  We have two trees they climb up, to the very top, and get those little apricot fruit Mom can’t reach.

Fox

Mom says we share here…works for her and works for them.  Also works for me, because I get to sniff all the news when they are on the farm and in the farm yard!

Sam-my-sam

Mom, Dad, Sammy-Sam, and I sit outside and watch all the hummingbirds every evening.

Little-Supper

We have four pair of Rufus Hummingbirds this year…Mom is really excited.  She says she counted about 30 little hummers.  I don’t get Mom’s excitement, it’s just part of the birds who live on our place.

Now what I find exciting is FOOTPRINTS in the mud!  THAT is exciting!

Our Days are Full of Gray-Blue Light—Monday, May 9, 2016

It’s raining here.  Has been for two days.  The weather people say it will rain at least until Tuesday.

Today Terry turned the irrigation water off. It’s too muddy to walk on the ditch banks.  To turn the irrigation water off is a very strange occurrence once it is turned on.

It’s extremely chilly outside, the air so fresh it will make you cough, if you take a good lungful of it.  The  trees are dripping, water sits on everything; running in rivulets off the eaves.

humming.jpgWe only have four little hummingbirds.  This photo is on May 13th a couple of years or so ago.  We have aways to go to reach this level of activity.

The sky is still lowering as I write; clouds black in the west and dark grey in the morning east.  It’s cold enough I want to start a fire in the fireplace, although we do have the furnace up and going.

Oh well, rain is good for so many things I will just enjoy it.  The weather people also say major heat is following these series of cold rain storms.
