The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday—Cats

Hummmm-3

Fuzzy and

HUMMMMMM-9

I have been busy gathering the smells from around Mom’s old wood, woodpile.

Feral-3

Sam-Sammy-Sam has been also.  Actually he has be stalking the old woodpile area; pacing here and there with that ‘I’m going to find you’ look in his eye.

Outside-not-by-will

Monkey (a nine-year-old, almost ALWAYS a house cat) was hanging out with us, as we were helping Mom sort the woodpile—Monkey got extremely nervous and hid –just waiting for Mom to head to house so she could beat Mom there and peel inside quickly.

Hen-tThe Little Buff Hen, who does NOT spend the night in the chicken house anymore, (because Mom only has ONE chicken and the chicken house is too lonely for a 6-year-old hen) acted like there was really nothing to worry about.

She said she was hanging out with Mom so she will always be safe.  (You are safe, Little Hen, because Fuzzy and I are with you!)

Cluck, cluck, purr, yummy, lots of good bugs under the old wood, she cooed.

Since Fuzzy and I have been hanging out here lots; day and night, Mom got to wondering why, so she moved the night camera to find out—

Fearl-7

“Oh”, said Mom.  “I see we have more cats.”

Fearl-9

“Two more cats.  They must be wild/feral as I have never seen them in the daytime.” She mused.

“No wonder you have that look in your eye, Sammy-Sam.  You need to be careful, Kitty, you aren’t a young cat anymore, you turned 13 this January.”

Harrumph! Sam growled as he turned tail and stalked over to the ditch bank.  I can still hold my own!  Hummm…

The-cat-who-loves-grass

this grass is rather nice, I think I’ll just roll around here for a spell and scratch my back…those other cats only come at night, right now isn’t night.  Besides, I usually spend most of my nights in the house next to fireplace…she doesn’t need to be such a worrywart.

Fox-Feral-1

“Ahhh, I see the fox is a regular little guest here.  Good thing you are well protected at night little Buff Hen,” Mom said as she bent down a petted the little buff hen.

“You boys keep a sharp look out for the fox; they travel around day or night.  Which, reminds me,” pondered Mom “I’m surprised we even have feral cats with the fox and the coyotes around.”

Fluffy-Feral

“UGH!  Now this is one nasty cat, an ‘ol polecat, you need to stay far, far away from this cat all of you!  That means you also, Little Buff Hen!”

You don’t have to worry about that Mom…Fuzzy and I just watch that skunk move through the yard, that’s one cat we do not want to tangle with ever again!

I agree, yelled Fuzzy as he tried to whap his tiny little bobbed tail in the air.

Writing

“Well, it’s starting to get evening and I’m getting tired.  Let’s head back to the house and see what I can come up with for supper!  Come on, Little Buff Hen.  It’s your bedtime.”

Cats…I guess Mom knows now, Fuzzy…we have lots of cats!

Just as long as they don’t get near the house, Boomer, we don’t have to do anything about them!

That’s good, Fuzzy, real good!

Oh, look…Yummy canned dog food!

You are right, Boomer…I hate that dry as cardboard crunchy kibble stuff.  I’m glad Mom has moved over to this nicer to chew (swallow, slurp, gulp) food!

Night Everyone!

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — A Little Bit

This is about a little bit

Pink-Clouds

A Little bit of THIS

A Little bit of THAT

Wing

Tee Hee!

We have a new bird on the farm.  There isn’t much to say about him except he is really loud…talks all the time and does this drumming thing.  He is Dad’s turkey…he hangs out wherever Dad is…in the shop, in the other shop…out by the grain bins.  Fuzzy and I don’t care ‘cause WE HANG WITH MOM!

Shannon just came over and took Tom back…she has to take her turkey back as she really misses him.  Well, that works … Tom told us he really misses home!

Hi-Houston

The dog cousins come over for a walk every day.  We LOVE IT!

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday —Night Visitors

I moved us outside…that stay’n in the house was start’n to wear on me.  Boom, now, he says he could stay in the house always.  But, Mom and Dad, and even I were getting right tired of Boomer sitting around panting.  So out we went.  Two days and two nights now, but Mom says we will have to move back in tonight as another winter storm is coming in today…it’s supposed to start raining this afternoon and then change over to snow.

Phewy!

But I suppose I should be grateful for the house. And Mom who insists we stay inside when it’s nasty outside.

Now if it’s raining AND THUNDERING I would MUCH PREFER being inside and right ON MOM, if she would let me!

Shudder, shudder, shake, and shudder!

But…onto night-time living.

Freddy-Fox-3

Freddy Fox comes by;

Dog-Fox-Hummhe is pretty regular…

Freddy-Fox-1always around

Freddy-Fox-2early in the morning.

Female

The two Raccoons come in the yard…not all the time, but they do come.  We can smell them coming so Boomer and I take off running as fast as we can to halllllllllllllllllllllllo at them.

Rikki-The-RaccoonOur running down the corral line always makes them hop up on the top of corral and scamper off back to the fields.

Sam-at-night

Sammy-Sam the cat hangs out with us until mid-night….he like to makes sure there are no stray cats on the property.  Then he gets tired and heads in for the night.  That cat sure seems to sleep a lot!  Then he comes back out around 4:00 in the morning, since there is usually something going on just before dawn.

Cat-on-the-search

Between us dogs and Sam we hardly ever have any stray cats, but we do get them.

Skunk-1

We had this visitor….Dad helped him go to the Big Skunk heaven in the sky somewhere.

Skunk-2

Can you imagine what SKUNK HEAVEN must smell like…………….phew.

Boomer-Nose

We like to patrol the property

Nose(just the outbuildings and the house and yards) day and night.

Sameeee

In the daytime we get to chase squirrels.  We have a couple of ground squirrels and boy, are they ever fun.

Hidden-Hens

There is always something happening…the chickens, other birds,  Dovesand we get to see

Going-byDad heading out to do work.  (We don’t go with Dad, just Mom.)

Yes, Sir!  That’s our job and I’m proud of it!

Fuzzy-searchin

Fuzzy ….oh, yes…and Boomer

More on the Nature of Things

I’m having internet problems…hopefully they can be fixed by Tuesday.  That’s the date to have it fixed anyway.  I can randomly blog, but I can’t send emails.  It’s driving me crazy.

Anyway, I lost a chicken last night to a nasty skunk!!!!  I heard the chickens hollaring around three o’clock in the morning…off I ran to the hen house, filpped on the red light and there the nasty thing was ———–Right in the process of chomping down on one of my hens!

Made me so mad I threw a stick at him.  (I didn’t want sprayed) Then I ran in and got Terry and he came with the gun.  By that time I was back out in the hen house, the other hens flew outside or into the run.  Quick count told me I was missing one.  Which meant the nasty bugger got one hen already.

How he got it would have to be dealt with in the morning, in the meantime the problem was to get the darn thing OUT of the hen house.

We could have shot it in there, but then the skunk spray would distroy the hen house and I didn’t want to have to rebuild a hen house.

So long story short…the skunk got away!

I only lost one chicken, I have a damaged hen, but I think she is going to recover, and I’ve set a trap for the skunk.  He will be back… they always do when they know there is easy pick’n for food.

Which reminds me, a neighbor who lives a few miles from us on the Plateau lost 3 goats to a bear one night, the bear returned the next night and got three more.  The government man gave them permission to shoot the bear if it returns. (Yes you have to ask permission.)  He returned, the bear hide left with the government men, the rest of him was buried with a backhoe on the property.

A ride on the Uncompahgre Plateau showed us that the nasty pine beetle has made it’s way into our woods  The Ponderosa and Yellow Pines are dying off just like the lodge pole pines from here to Denver.

I hope you can see all the little holes in the bark, that is where the beetle bores into the tree.  I wonder what it’s going to take for something to finally be done to save the pines?  It takes years and years and years for a tree to get this big.

I guess I had better stop now, this post is really rather negative.

Sorry,

Linda

Hidey Holes

This time of year we start to get ready for water. Water on our farm is transported through culverts, ditches, underground transport pipes, and gated pipe.

These same pieces of transportation for water are also really good homes for critters: fox, skunk, feral cats, and feral dogs from the rigors of winter.  The problem of making these things their homes is instant death as soon as the water is turned in.

Therefore, we like to check all everywhere making sure there is nothing living there.

Getting them out of their burrow (the water transportation unit) can sometimes be a real problem, especially if we are talking about skunks.

home-in-a-pipe

But this year we are safe (so far).

somebodies-home

Skunks are mating right now, and will be looking for a nice warm nest, but water is just a few weeks off and if we cover the ends they will move on to dens in the ground.

The coyotes have dens on the hills on our place, but I’m not brave enough to go poking my head where they are.  I have been thinking I might, MIGHT, go to where they live and see if I could get any baby pictures, but I haven’t worked up enough courage.
