About Dayphoto

My name is Linda Brown. I live on a farm on the western slope of Colorado, in the high mountain desert. I’ve lived here all my life, hailing back four generations on my father’s side. Today I blog about our farm, the everyday activities that keep the farm going. I also write about my thoughts and dreams and goals. On Friday’s I always write about TLC Cai-Cai. Our sweet kitty who helps keep the farm safe. And Boo Berry Betty, a breeder dog learning to be a Farm Dog! The lovely thing about blogging it opens the world up for all of us to reach out and meet people from many different cultures and different ways of life. Fossils-1When working up the ground this year, Terry found this amazing rock in the two-acre field

Fossils-2He sat it aside and promptly forgot about it until yesterday.   When we were up there checking on the water he remembered it.  Leading me over to the fence line where he had carefully placed it (so he wouldn’t forget) he asked me to look in the particular spot where it was resting…hiding.

A Collection of Fossils!

How blessed I am.

Look to the Sky— Sunday, July 17, 2016

Hot-Summer-night-2

The Full Buck Moon or the Full Thunder Moon will occur July 19, 2016 (6:56 pm ET).

TomatoesJuly…We are experiencing Hot Summer Days and Hot Summer nights.  The heat shimmers like deep violet then fades into blue-black immensity

Yard-1By morning the air has thinned and crisped like distant stars in the sky–a huge relief

Yard-2The Sun rises

Yard-3And the day begins, the balance of our waking hours filled with the immensity of each minute and hour

Yard-10 Then it is night again. The sky swimming with stars, the silver globe of the moon; illuminating the void

Hot-Summer-night-3With that sky so immense it boggles my mind, knowing that it covers you AND I.

No wonder people look to the sky when talking to God…that huge expanse so near at hand, yet so far.

Hot-Summer-Night-1From my world to your heart,

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—A HUGE WONDERFUL TREAT

WalkI’ve had an ear infection again.  After a trip to the Animal Doctor I got two…BOTH earfuls of ‘stuff’ in my ears.  Then my ears were massaged and massaged…I didn’t yelp once!  That stuff felt sooooooooooo good.

Going-to-townAfter a week I had to go back to the Animal Doctor where a cold thing was poked into my ears and I was pronounced “GOOD to GO!”

GO!!!  My favorite word…right up there with FOOD, Treat!  DINNER!

To-townThat evening Mom and Dad came out of the house and Mom said: “Let’s GO for a ride, Boomie.”

I beat them to the pick-up!  It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten to ride in the BACK of the pick-up!  Mom didn’t want my very long soft ears flapping in the wind—she said the wind might make my ears ache again.

Going-for-a-rideBut this time—OH! THE JOY! I got to ride in the back of the pick-up.

Evening-rideDad threw down my carpet –up next to the cab of the truck—Mom picked me up and helped me into the bed and we were off!

An-OutingI LOVE going for rides!  There are so many different things to see and smell, it just makes the day so much better.

I like any kind of ride, but the back of the pick-up ride is WONDERFUL!

With the Scent of a Summer Night, Comes the Dawn—-Thursday, July 14, 2016

Day-endingI am working feverishly to get everything caught up.   For you see, we have company coming.  Terry’s Sister and brother-in-law will be here on Sunday, then Monday we get to have our youngest Granddaughter for THE WEEK!  And I don’t want to be cleaning, weeding, or working hard during that time.

Grain-BinsOur days are hot and over-powering in the overwhelming heat, causing sweat to run down my face as I weed, rake, fertilize, prune, trim and mow. My body slowing turning into the wind, earth and water as I melt.

Bees and wasps buzz heavily, with  gnats and mosquitoes in clouds; creating easy fodder for the swallows nesting all along the edges of our house.

Summer-time

Our yard is dizzy with the scents of grass, sweet white lilies, and water sprinkling on the lawn.

Shade

My weeding of the pinto bean fields are done!  I finished the two acre field last night.  From this point on we turn our heads and choose not to see the weeds, which will flourish there anyway, coming from the wind and water.

Sunrise

The sun breaks forth over the line of trees quickly rising to heat the day; riding on the scents of last night.

Through-the-leaves

As I worked I noticed a narrow crack of stunning light showing my everything— is worth it.

A Song Echoed to My Heart—-Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Bird-on-a-wireOur yard is full of birds… birds of every hue and color

BirdThey start the day with joyful tweets and chirps

Black-and-WhiteAnd end the day with sleepy little good-night calls.

Last evening, as the darkness descended, a little Swallow sat on the wire leading from the electric pole to our house singing a song that sounded more like an alarm.   His or her call was so insistent that I had to look out the window to see why.

The sweet little bird was looking right back at me, trying with all the might of the world to tell me something was NOT right…something wrong was there—right there—come out NOW!

Tonto(This is Tonto I caught him on camera one afternoon as he moved through our yard.)

Laying on the grass, cooling off was Tonto…a very ancient German Shepard/Wolf mix dog, (he is 16 years old), and lives one mile from us.  Randomly he walks up to our place, usually because he has been left at his home for days and days on end in a state of without.

He travels across the flat lands until he gets here, then rests, until I find him.  Once I get him all gathered up and cooled down, I load him up…load up food, take down lots of water, several dog snacks…chew bones and other things, and deliver him home.

There are three of us who watch out for Tonto, his closest next door neighbor, our daughter Shannon and myself.

And now I know…the birds do too.

Stunning-Cloud

Bird song talks to us, it echos throughout our hearts, the little guardian’s of the world.

Love,

Linda

A Rhapsody in Sunsets—Tuesday, July 12, 2016

Sun-leaving-the-clouds

The sun leaving the day behind often dazzles the eyes Day-ending

The dark starting to gulp the light forces the sun shadows

3to fling light heavy and still

Jet-and-sunset

Until all is left–a jet stream blazing a trail across the sky.

A song of evening.

From my world to your heart.

A Much Needed Break—Monday, July 11, 2016

Off-we-goTerry and I needed a break!  We needed something to do that wasn’t related to the farm, something different—and close enough to the farm we would only be gone a few hours.

50-inchesSo off we went to the Uncompahgre Plateau.

Up there we ran into Hank and Angie Davis, as we turned onto the trail to Dry Mesa. Davis’ are the ranchers who calve out their cows on our place in the winter.  They also live and ranch just below us in the Roubidoux Canyon. AND they live on the Plateau while the cows are summering up there.

A short ways in we ran into Bob and Lois Helgland and their son, also on their way to Dry Mesa.  The Helgland’s live on the Plateau most of the year, but have another home two miles from us heading east.

Then we met our daughter Shannon and Jason on their way for a Sunday ride.  We rode with them.

Trail

I always bring up the rear…I’m slow.  I’m not on a ride to race.  I’m on a ride to take photos

Dry-MesaAlthough, I sometimes get so far behind I can’t see or hear anyone.  It’s usually at that point I get concerned I took the wrong road and am now lost.
So far I haven’t.  Which is a good thing.

HOTBy two o’clock we were back home setting water in the heat and the wind.

A nice break.  One much needed.

Your friend,

Linda

It’s That Time of Year—-Sunday, July 10, 2106

PintosIt’s that time of year…when the cultivator stops and the human weeder takes over (ME)

Weeding-the-bean-fieldEarly, early morning and after 8 o’clock in the evening out we go…Terry to change the water and Boomer and I to weed the pinto beans.   Up and down, up and down, pulling out the cockle burs, the sunflowers, and other nasty things.

I’m making headway.  Almost done for the season.  The pinto beans are starting to shoot feelers, from that point on if a weed wants to grow, it will get too.  I won’t be able to get in there to stop them from developing.

Two more days and I will be done. Two more days.  I’m into the count down.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—The Week—It’s a Wrap!

Face

Can you see the face in the cloud?

Mom says she guesses she is glad this week is finally over.  She reached down picked me up and placed me beside her on the loveseat, then reached over and put Sam-Sam on her lap.  I liked this…Dad in his chair and Mom and I and Sam on the loveseat.   All of us together.

If we still had Monkey she would be on Mom shoulder, as it is……………..

Ride-1

Well, anyway.  The little family came from Craig, Colorado and spent 6 whole days with us.

Ride-2

The kids stayed with us or with Aunt Shannon.  Their Mom and Dad stayed in the fifth-wheel camper.

Ride-6

There were lots of bike rides and

Sometimes-Walk

dog walks and family times of eating.

Horse-comes-to-a-picknick

Romeo, the horse, even came to the picnic.

GOOD-BYE

Then suddenly it was time for everyone to go…Mom cried.  She said she is having trouble with all the good-byes that happened this week.

Leaving

I’ve stayed RIGHT at Mom’s side or RIGHT behind her —sometimes she says:  “I love you, Boomie!  But not so close, I have to walk, you know.”  Then she gives me a kiss on the nose and asks me to move.

Rocks

BUT

Staying right by your side…That is what Boomie’s are for!

My-Boomer

So I stick like glue.  I do this, because I know Mom needs me.

Sunset-1

“Oh, you’re the best friends anybody ever had.  And it’s funny, but I feel as if I’d know you all the time, but I couldn’t have, could I?”–Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz

You are, you know.  You have been there for me in all sorts of ways, through the good times and the times when My Heart Shattered.

You have picked me up—held my hand—and helped me moved forward.

Sunset I am so grateful for all of you.  Thank you.

Love,

Linda
