The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — A Christmas Story

Are you sleepy, Boomer?

No not really.  Are you sleepy Fuzzy?

No.  I haven’t done much today but sleep.

You know, Fuzzy, I was wondering do you know anything about this time everyone calls Christmas?

Well, I know a few things—like our people always put up trees, and hang lights outside so we can see the best bushes to pee on.  They go to town lots and come home with packages that Mom puts all over the place.  Then she puts those packages under the tree and waits.

Then the big day comes and everyone is here to eat food and drop stuff on the floor and eat food and laugh and make an even bigger mess than we would EVER think of making!

Really, Fuzzy…that is all there is to this Christmas Thing?

Well….really ….Boomer, no…no that really isn’t what Christmas is really about…it’s so much more.

Story

Gosh, that’s good Fuzzy, please tell me.  I really want to know.

Okay, Boom…it goes like this—

When I was a little tiny pup many, many years ago my Momma told me this story.  My Momma said her Momma told her and her Momma before that all the way back to when this story started.

This sounds really good, Fuzzy I’m all ears!

It’s called—How We Got Christmas

Oh!  Good!  Now I will know.  Thank you, Fuzzy.

Well, a long, long time ago in a land far, far and away, a land full of sand and giant animals called camels.

Camels?

Yes, Boomer.  But the story isn’t about camels.

Okay, Fuzzy…I’ll listen.

In this land of sand and camels and sun…there was a man and a woman traveling to a big city to pay their taxes for the year.

What are taxes, Fuzzy?

They are like, hummm—if you have five bones and Mom makes you give her one because she thinks you have too many, then that one bone you give Mom is a tax.

OH!  I don’t think I like taxes.  I’m really glad Mom doesn’t make us pay taxes, Mom gives us the BONES!!! J

Gone on Fuzzy, I like this story.

Okay, the man and the woman were traveling to this big city; with lots and lots of other people. There were so many people that all the places where people sleep were full except where my great, great, great, great so many greats that I can’t remember them all, Grandmother Dog was living.

My many Greats Grandmother Dog was the guard dog of a place call an Inn.  It was her duty to watch over all the travelers who came to stay with her Master in the Inn.  She also watched out for all the animals that her Master kept.

Every day My many Greats Grandmother would go with her Master to feed and milk the cow that lived in the stable.  It was this milk that her Master would feed to the people staying in his Inn.  She also helped wake-up the many chickens that were roosting in the stable, and went with the Master to feed and water the donkeys that were resting there until their people were ready to leave again.

My many greats Grandmother had a wonderful job and she loved every minute of it.  Most nights she would sleep in the inn, but when the inn was full she would sleep on an old blanket next to the door of the stable to keep guard over the many animals staying within its walls.

My many greats Grandmother Dog was just getting ready to go to the stable one evening, when a man and woman showed up at the door of the inn.  Her Master greeted the couple and explained that his place was full, that he had no room.

The man then asked if the Master knew of any place, just any place at all whereby they could rest for the night.  The Master said that he was embarrassed to say, but if they wanted they could bed down in the stable free of charge and rest.

Off they all went, the donkey, the man, his wife and my many greats grandmother. Once there, and very close to the cow’s manger, the couple laid down their belonging and unloaded the donkey.  My many greats Grandmother Dog said that the man had very kind eyes and a soft loving voice.  He brushed the donkey down, gave all the other donkeys lots of pets, rubbed the cow’s ears and ASKED Grandmother dog to come sleep with them to keep them warm.

The lovely mother patted the blanket and called softly to Grandmother Dog and even offered her a small tidbit to eat.

Grandmother said it was the most peaceful time she had ever experienced in the barn.

It was just wonderful!

Gradually she fell asleep, lulled by the soft sounds of the other animals in the barn and the warmth of the man and the woman.  It wasn’t long before Grandmother Dog was awaken and asked to go guard the door of the stable. Grandmother Dog didn’t question the command; going to the door and sitting up in a guarding stance.

Like this, Fuzzy?

Yes, Boomer, just like that.

Well as Grandmother Dog sat in the opening of the stable door, an amazing light started to fill the sky. Then the light filled the whole stable!  Grandmother Dog turned from the door and saw that the light seemed to be strongest right over the cow’s manager.

Walking toward the manger ever so slowly and carefully Grandmother Dog saw a tiny sleeping baby.  The gentle Mother of the tiny baby called Grandmother Dog to come closer, to come see the tiny babe in the manger.

Grandmother Dog walked forward and stared at the tiny little bundle of human love and gave the sleeping child a HUGE WET DOG KISS right on its tiny little cheek!

When Grandmother Dog kissed this tiny human the child opened his eyes and smiled upon Grandmother Dog and she KNEW that this new human Loved Grandmother Dog clear through her soul.

Suddenly the light grew so large and bright that Grandmother Dog had to look up to see what was causing so much brightness…almost like the sun was in the stable!

WOW Fuzzy!  Was it the sun? AT NIGHT?  In a barn?

No, Boom, it was a person…a really beautiful shiny person!  The person was so beautiful that Grandmother Dog had to sit down and stare.

This really beautiful person then talked to Grandmother Dog in DOG language!

Really, Fuzzy!  A person can actually talk and understand dog language?

This person could Boomer, because this person was an Angel sent from above, to guide people to the stable.  So the people could see the new little babe and to bring him gifts!

“Oh,” Grandmother Dog said.  “I wish I could give this child a gift.  If I could I would give him my protection for the rest of my life.”

The Angel then looked into Grandmother Dog’s eyes sending love and peace and wonder, filling Grandmother Dog’s heart near to bursting.

“That” said the Angel “Is what this day is all about…the love of this child is for everyone and everything in the whole world. You, Little Dog, understand that you are willing to give – out of pure love – to those around you — which is Christmas!  Christmas is the celebration of the birth of this little babe and the gift of love!   Then the lovely Angel reached down and gave Grandmother Dog a wondrous kiss right on HER nose!

This whole experience touched Grandmother Dog so much that she told every one of her children and admonished each child to pass this story down clear until this day and forever.

Now you know the story, Boomer, maybe someday you will be able to pass this story on to another dog.  That way the gift of love from the little babe and the beautiful angel will never fade away.

Gosh, Fuzzy!  That was something!  I will…I will pass this on, someday, I promise.

Good Boomer, I’m a little tired now.

Me too Fuzzy…I hope I can dream of this wonderful story.

Gosh. That was so neat, Fuzzy.

Merry Christmas, Boomer!

Thank you Fuzzy!  Merry Christmas to you!

Merry Christmas to everyone,

I love the moon!  I love when the moon is full — spreading sliver and crystal and blue lights upon the land.

Rising-2

The dogs and I go for a walk, just to be showered in the lovely glow

Rising-1

We go just as it’s just coming up and we go again just before nine at night

December-moonI always try to wake-up sometime during the night, just to take the dogs and go walking down the lane…oh, sometime around one or so in the morning.  The dogs know the second I start putting on my Carhart we are going for a walk.

I don’t walk out into the fields late at night…too many coyotes and other critters I don’t want to meet, but in the evening we do.

PaoniaIn the evening we are surrounded in the glow of the winter sunset

Raggeds1With the air full of winter bird calls…the Canadian Geese and the Sandhill Cranes…later after mid-night the owls will hoo-hoo -hoo , we will hear a fox barking and the coyotes yipping as the moon light and the star light fills the shinning clear air.

We will walk along, the dogs sniffing out news and I watching stars fall from a million years ago.

The neighbor’s dog (who lives outside, no matter the temperatures) will hear us crunching along in the snow, or hear me calling to Boomer to not go off too far…he adds his warning bark to the other sounds.  His people, either don’t care nor never hear, I call to him…’It’s okay…it’s just us walking in the moonlight.  It’s okay…’  He stops.  Then calls out again…”GOOD NIGHT” I call back…’Sleep Well, little dog!  Sleep Well.”  Then the dogs and I go in to the warmth of the wood stove and snugly blankets.

December-moon

By five in the morning the moon has made it’s way to shine into the bedroom windows, lighting up Sammy the cat as he sleeps on the edge of the bed. Sam puts a paw over his eyes and keeps on sleeping.  Monkey jumps into the window to watch the world from the warmth and safety of the house.  I too watch the world as the moon slowly sinks and the day begins.

Good Morning everyone!

Your friend,

Linda

A SURPRISE!!! Tuesday, December 17, 2013

Yesterday was just like all the other days…way too busy and yet not over the top (yet).  Our eldest daughter lives two miles from us and works about an hour away.  I always go down and check on her wood fire to make sure everything is still toasty warm.  We do this because she lives alone and we would hate for her to have frozen pipes.  That has happened before, which requires Terry to go down and help her thaw them.

We have a new mailman…a really nice kid.  He is still learning the route that we live on (it’s a big’un 75 miles) so he sometimes doesn’t have our mail to us until late in the day.  (I feel really sorry for him — he said he is getting better, it just takes so much time to sort the mail before he can get started in the day.

Anyway, I stopped at the mailbox on this trip down…no mail.  Next trip down around five the mail was there having come sometime between noon and five.  Inside was a box addressed to me!

Cool!

Back home I opened it up to find that FarSide had sent to Terry and I and each grandchild a hand-carved ornament for our trees!

From-Connie-!These whimsical ornaments were  from the huge branch that fell last summer from our Cottonwood tree.

I have followed FarSide’s blog for several years and knew that she and husband loved to do wood carvings.  They particularly liked to use Cottonwood bark.  I gathered a box and shipped it off to her to see if she could use it.  She could.  Wonderful!

I did not expect to have a craving from the wood, I just wanted her to have some of the bark.  Gradually over-time I forgot about the wood, knowing that, if and when, it was carved it would be blogged about with pictures for all to see.

The gift was a total surprise!!!  Just plain delightful!  Terry and I commented how creative they are to be able to ‘see’ what the wood is saying.  I’m afraid I only see firewood, mulch, wood chips…ack!  I’m not able to see what stone or marble or wood really is projecting.

Thank you so much, Connie!  They are just perfect!

Your farm friend,

Linda

PurpleYesterday the morning dawned pink and blue and lavender

Gradually the air warmed up allowing the dogs and I to go for a walk.

Walk2It’s always slow going (now) for Fuzzy.  I’m not in any hurry.  We stop here and there and he sniffs the weeds and adds to the smells already on them.

Walk-1Boomer has a hard time staying close by.  After a time is feels like he just ‘has to head-out’ to smell what he can smell.

Run

He always comes back…on the run.  Always!  What a fun goofy dog he is!

The snow has become ragged and tired slowly melting.  Yesterday we got up to 34*; today we will get up 41*  They tell us another snowstorm is due in here sometime late this week. Until then we will take the warmth.  Usually after a snow storm it turns very cold again.

The tractor shed door opener broke last week, so today Terry is putting up the new one.  He thought it was the gear that went out, but it was the circuit board.  (As you know we are having a rash of things breaking.)

The furnace is still a huge problem, it is looking like we won’t be able to get it fixed until sometime this summer.  Just to fix it is going to require digging under the house –by hand.  Neither one of us want to do this work in the snow and cold.  We have the wood-stove and lots of wood so we are good for the rest of the year.

Anyway, we are moving forward on the things to fix list…4010 fixed (we still need to hook-up the loader on it), still working on the garage door, the bean combine fixed and put up for the year, still have to get the metal welded under the gasoline combine, but the chain is fixed, still looking for a motor for the diesel combine…see we are moving forward…everything just takes time.

SunsetGetting closer to Christmas.   I have the menu’s planned now and the daytime activities.  I just need to shop for food.

The weatherman says our days of 25-28* high is about to change.  When it does it will do so rapidly!  As of the moment of this writing it is 17* here and clear, but the high today will be 36*.  That will probably only be for an hour before everything starts it’s downward fall to 7* or less tonight.

River-1

BUT I WILL TAKE IT!!  To get to 36* it has to pass by freezing to warming up! (Of course if it stays this way very long we will head into mud, which is not a fun place to be on a farm.)

River-2

By Thursday we will be back to snow and ice.  For a short time, just about four days we will think we’ve lost winter.  I can guarantee I’m going to be enjoying this false warm-up!

River-3

The Gunnison River is floating ice…it’s pretty darn cold when running water starts to make ice in huge chunks.  🙂

Christmas is close now.  I have all my shopping down except for the food purchases…I will get that accomplished this week then it will time to get the two day’s of entertainment and activity in place.  December is winding down.

Even at my advanced age the idea of and the preparation for Christmas has never dimmed.  As the song says: (to me) ‘it is the most wonderful time of the year!’

Your December loving friend,

Linda

We warmed up to 18* yesterday so the dogs and I went for a walk to the upper end.

It was beautiful…the snow sparkled in the sunlight (although there really isn’t lots of snow), the air was crisp and bright.  We laughed lots.  Fuzzy had a slow time, but Boomer and I weren’t in any hurry.

The walk lasted some time bringing with it gifts of (not only sunlight, and crisp cheek freezing air),shadows on the snow

More-ShadowsThe colors of winter are full of blues, mixed with white, shades of pink and lavender

Mud-1

While fall is orange and brown and gold

Last-showSummer’s colors are rich and vivid and robust–with many shades of green and red and purple

Columbine-2While spring brings us the colors of hope and new life…yellow green, white, and yellow.

ShadowsEven though we are frozen the shadows and the sun bring us beauty of another kind.

Linda

Winter Skies

Winter-Sky-3

Filled with lavender and blue
Dreaming of a Summer Day
Winter-Sky2
The colors scream of silence
Yet the Winter birds fill the air
Calling to us from a far
Upon the frozen air
Winter-Sky-1The Northern Star sits closely now

Within the frosty sky
As moonlight filters through the air
And Sunlight sparkles snow
Winter-Sky-1
Winter Skies
Casting sliver shadows on the land
Peace
(A very poor attempt of poetry)
From the sleeping farm,
Linda

The very deep freeze is here and will stay for some time.  We woke-up to -6* (-21.11 c).  Cold is relative I know.  Some of you are seeing much colder temps than we are, but us, here…this is C.O.L.D!

Grand-Mesa-SnowIt looked like snow lingered on Grand Mesa for most of the day.  Today it is crisp and clear up there.

Terry and I were feeling housebound so we decided to go for a short drive…our neighbor was moving his 2-year olds into the corn field

Moving-CowsWe wanted to see what the snow level looked like ‘up-in-the-hills’.  It’s starting to look very nice.  If we continue to get more snow all through the winter water will not be as much of a concern as it was last year.

Come on snow!!

SnowI thought the trees were extremely beautiful all decked out in their winter finery.

Oh

Today I need to finish up some Christmas shopping. Then I will need to get things for both Christmas meals…the Christmas Eve Dinner and the Christmas Day Dinner.  I haven’t really decided which one to make the really big one–Turkey, ham, all the other dishes or the lighter one….lots of buffet foods…I’m leaning toward the Dinner at night and the buffet one on Christmas Day.

Usually, we have a treasure hunt in the afternoon of Christmas Day, but with the snow (and if it melts) the mud the thought just doesn’t appeal so I’m thinking we will play lots of games.  Games and snacking and just enjoying each other seems like the way to go for a long Christmas Day.

Wishing each of you a really nice day today,

Your friend,

Linda
