Summer, That Beautiful Time of the Year —- Tuesday, August 13, 2019

I love summer, idyllic warm (even hot) summer days.

I plan all fall, winter, and spring for this time, for summer.

The land is heavy as it nears harvest

The heat massive and somnolent

Butterflies and Hummingbirds sailing along in the warm air

The Bumblebees and Honeybees so heavy with pollen their buzz even sounds labored

Our August nights have now become mild,

a sweet chill on the air before the sun warms the sky—giving the earth a spectral look,  As though the Otherworld is peaking through.

Summer, each and every day dazzles; my heart, my mind, and my eyes.

Glowing in the Sun —- Monday, August 12, 2019

(Stolen from Pinterest)

Sadly summer is going fast!  Ever so fast!

The little Rufus Hummingbirds have arrived…always a signal the migration has begun

Then, yesterday, I noticed I was missing seeing the Robins

and the Oriels.  Darn it.

Summer is sinking fast.

Yes I know it’s still hot.  But time is winding down.

Moving toward that bright heady experience of Harvest and Fall, or Autumn, however, you wish to call it.

School is starting (even started in some places).

There we have it…summer, that most wondrous time of the year, is feeling the long, long shadow of loss of the Spring birds

Kinda sad, really.  But I’m going to take it one day at a time; pretending the cold weather is WAY out there in the future!

It’s Not All Work —Sunday, August 11, 2019

The back porch, which is really part of my kitchen is coming along nicely.  The new floor is laid, the walls painted, the trim painted and I got the door washed down.

Since this turned out so well, I’m going to start on the bathroom soon.  Maybe next week.

Maybe.

Because we finished and everything looked so nice,  Terry said, “Let’s go for a ride!”

Heck, why not!

We went to Ouray, Colorado for a ‘spin’ stopping on the way back to get a photo of a huge herd of elk.  There were around 30 head grazing in someone pasture, I only got a small portion of them in the photo.

Then another day this week, we got a phone call from some good friends, who were broke down on the Uncompahgre Plateau.

Off we went to help them.  The day was exceptionally warm (well, some people would say BLAZING HOT, but I say exceptionally warm 🙂  ).   Still stunningly beautiful.

The heady scent of sun-warmed rocks, the smell of tree needles, and the sounds of insects beating a perfect rhyme to the plateaus heartbeat—perfect.  We got them down and the repair on the truck an easy fix.

It all turned out well.

Of course, I didn’t get enough paint so there was the quick run to the hardware store and back again.

Then in the evening, as the day starts winding down, so do I and so does Terry.

We sit outside watching the afternoon sun fade and enjoying the heady scent of flowers sliding deliciously over the farm.

I truly must say: Life is Good!

Off on an Adventure Chapter Eleven

Chapter Eleven

Off I went…over hill and dale.  Hill and Dale, consists of going over the top of COYOTE Hill and down into the valley by COYOTE Hill.

I kept on keeping on then suddenly I ran into a rank nasty smell——–COYOTE POOP!
And it’s FRESH!

OH! MY! GOODNESS!

Coyotes are in the area!

I sat down to ponder what to do next.  It seemed rather quickly that the sun sat and there I was in the dark!

Alone.

On COYOTE HILL!

With FRESH COYOTE POOP just before my eyes and nose!

What am I going to do!?!?!

Dark came up and swallowed me while I sat there.

I couldn’t decide which way to go or which way to turn.  If the coyote poop was fresh then that means coyotes are here, close by, like right NEXT to me.

While I was sitting there, still as a statue a coyote came trotting up and over the hill.

I about passed out.

Scooting myself under a brush I tried to make myself small, small, small.

The coyote moved on.  Trotting over the little hill looking for food.

Shudder!!!

I was just crawled out from under my safety brush when the family of Raccoons came running by…fast.

As fast as raccoons can run!

One of the raccoons ran right smack dab into me bowling me over.

“Get up dog! Coyotes are coming…four of them.  They are just about here!”

I scrabbled in terror and started running with the raccoons.

We ran and ran and ran finally reaching a place of safety.

We all hid again.

Then there the coyotes were; moving along in a zig-zap fashion sniffing the ground hunting for MICE!

Oh, thank you so much.  Mice are hard to catch, very time consuming, and require lots of concentration.

The raccoons and I huddled together and waited. It wouldn’t do to move around now and draw attention to us…. we are all much bigger than mice and could fill tummies much easier and much fuller.  Just say’n.

We sat there waiting and waiting and waiting.

The night grew darker. And darker.

There wasn’t a moon in the sky and the stars were hidden behind clouds.

“I’m going for help!” the littlest Raccoon announced in a whisper.  “We need help!” with that statement he was gone.

The night wore on.

The coyotes kept right on hunting, moving here and there. Sometimes stopping to chew on a mouse.  We could hear the crunch of little bones and the squelch of teeth…oh! My!

Then the little raccoon was back. And with him—-

YAY! I almost jumped up and out of my hidden spot

A WEAPON!

We all high-fived each other gave our weapon (Oreo) paws up with big smiles on our faces.

Our little hero walked off, with a purposeful stride, heading right toward the coyotes.

We saw the tail raise

BAM! The air around us, the coyotes and our little weapon, Oreo,  turned the air into the most satisfying odor of all skuniness!!!!

We were saved!

The coyotes ran off howling!

We rolled out of our hiding places roaring with laughter!

It was a joyous and wonderful occasion.

The heavens sang to us yesterday afternoon

Washing the air clean, leaving the soil warm and damp, the grass shining, the corn leaves radiating their rich smell of corn pollen all through the air.

This morning the heavy clouds started rolling back; the sun claiming the sky.

Everything feels rich, yet languid, draped in lush shadows and pleasant fragrances.

Life is good.

In Spite of Myself—Wednesday, August 7, 2019

(From Pinterest)

After I made my post yesterday, in full intentions of painting the back porch

I, instead, decided to wash all the windows in the house

Then, of course, I decided I would weed.  Just one garden room,

maybe two

By that time I needed to start lunch

Well, it was close enough anyway.

Then after lunch…I had no more excuses…I began.

In a windless hot part of the day I began.  How silly of me.  But by the time I had the walls started and I saw the difference my heart lifted up and I had all sorts of energy to continue.

I am so glad I finally started!  The room is taking shape.  Today I will do the trim and Terry is going to lay a new floor (which is needed desperately), then I will wash down the outside door.

I’m so glad I began!  And my shoulder did NOT hurt at all last night!  YAY!

In a couple of days, I will tackle the bathroom!

Going Full-Tilt and Needing to Stop—Tuesday, August 6, 2019

Less distractions from the things that matter

Sometimes my life becomes so full I want to run away.  But, actually, what I want is to find a routine and a bit of down-time.

I have been wanting to paint the inside of my house since March.

March!

Here it is August and I’m still trying to figure out when to start.

So I suppose, instead of letting my worry about getting started run me ragged

Today, in just a very few minutes, I will begin.  Then by tonight, I will know if my shoulder will accommodate the up and down of the roller.

Where Do Childhood Dreams Go? —- Sunday, August 4, 2019

“Things you are passionate about are not Random They are your Calling.”—By Fabienne Fredrickson

Sometimes I wonder.  Where do all those fantasies we dreamed of, as young children,  vanish too?

They seem to become lost somewhere between growing up and growing old

I have spent some time pondering this: looking back upon some of my childhood dreams and desires

Their radiance of possibly more like a thin vapor in my old age

Still, within the scudding, mundane chores and routines of every day

They surely are there in the shielding cover of adulting.

Sometimes I get a wee spark of that time, of years long gone, when the possibility of life and being alive and creating a space in the time called living shine forth once more.

A place where it is easy to listen to the voice of your childhood dreams

Where the shaded windows of your own soul wake up and you remember and feel the excitement all over again.

Off on an Adventure Chapter Ten

Chapter Ten

While I was sleeping, I dreamed of MOM!

  Mom and I doing things.

You know just stuff.

I also dreamed of barking the mailman down the long lane

and baying at the UPS driver.

I even dreamed that Mom took me to that big friendly to dogs store and let me sniff around while she did some shopping.

That dream woke me up with a start.

I MISS MOM! I thought.

Here I am way over here and Mom is somewhere way over there.

WHY did I think I wanted to go on an adventure in 90*+ weather, coyotes loose on the farm and me in an elderly stage of life?

WHY?

As I was sitting there in the shade Harry the Hawk came coasting by. I just watched him.

I sorta, kinda, don’t really like Harry.  He likes to eat my friends or potential friends.  I really didn’t want Harry to see me…who knows he might want to eat a really sweet, fat, wonderful, old beagle.

I scooted back under the brush a little further.

Harry flew on.

Good!

About that time I noticed we were experiencing raindrops!

YAY!

Raindrops are good.  Cools down the earth and the sky.

Looking around I spied a RAINBOW!

Yippee! I shouted. Bouncing right out from under my bush and bounded over by the equipment, “A RAINBOW!” I bayed

“A RAINBOW!”

“I like rainbows, also. Beagle dog!” a tiny little voice called to me.

Turning around I saw a member of Chip’s family.  “Hey! I haven’t seen you before.  Are you new here?” I asked.

“Well, kinda new.  I’ve been living with my Mom and three siblings. Mom told us we could all go out and play now.  We didn’t have to stay inside with her all the time.”

“Pleased to meet you….” I paused.  “Ur, umm…I don’t think I know your name.  I’m Boomer and you are?”

“Beatrice—Mom says the name means Bringer of Joy in our language.”

“Well, now, isn’t that just perfect.  All things are starting to look up…I met you, the Bringer of Joy and I saw a rainbow.”

Beatrice gave me a huge smile, “I have to go now, Boomer Beagle Dog, it’s starting to get night and Mom told me I had to be back in the nest before dark.  She said danger lurked out of the nest in the dark.”

With that, she flicked her tail at me and was gone.

Hum.  I slept for a long time, I mused.

Dark.  I’m not looking forward to another night out here, but I guess I slept way too long today and here I am.

In the darkening evening.

BUT

I Saw a RAINBOW and I Met Beatrice.  Things are looking up!

I trotted down to the little creek and got a good drink of water, then put one paw in front of the other to head myself home.
